Microsoft Updates hacked? Today and ongoing. "Security updates"

Many returns about this on duckduckgo. From one:

"Today, I've been coping with the same Windows Update problems as many people -- with KB2760411 and KB2760588 endlessly reinstalling -- and attempting to resolve that included multiple system restarts --"

Hmmm, you might consider doing a system restore to a date before the updates, then disable automatic system updates until things get settled.

Seems to be a reoccurring problem, it's all over a lot of bulletin boards. Seems to be updates for Office 2007 regardless of OS and has been a problem since XP. You don't mention your version of Windows but if the patches are already installed, here's what I'd do.

Click Start.
In the search box type "windows update" You should see "Windows Update" in the column.
Click that to open Windows Update
Click "Check for updates" - this will force Windows to search your PC for whatever triggers it's looking for.
If one or both of those come up either as an ...important update... or ...optional update... you can disable (and hide) it by clicking on the update name itself (not the check box) and selecting "Hide update." You won't (or shouldn't) be asked to install it in the future.

FWIW, I have my settings set to "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them." That way I don't get a lot of the garbage that's offered.

Don't panic.
Microsoft has had an issue with some updates previously as Dale said.
If you look in your "Updates History" ,you'll likely find both are showing as having a "successful" status as mine shows.
Give it a few days for MS to get it together and in the meantime ,disable the download and install feature of Update.

Similar problem trying to install up dates for Windows 7 my computer would not reboot always went into restore and finally would reboot. More update came the next day some installed some didn't. always had problem rebooting did safe mode and more . Finally the OS or hard drive died. Called Dell tech support they took control of my PC and later told me my HD was dead. Not so I had a tech come to the house HD was ok so he reinstalled the OS.

Now MS says I have 147 updates. What the best approach to this amount of updates?

Thanks in Advance

If you have specific drivers for your monitor, sound, network card, etc. install those first to ensure everything is working correctly and (I) ignore all optional updates having anything to do with sound/video/network/etc. If they're working now, don't take a chance of breaking them.

Set aside some time you can be without your PC. Some updates require reboots and configuration and some can't be installed unless a previous 'fix' was done. If you have an MS Office Suite, don't install it until all of the previous updates are done as there will be security updates and patches for the Office Suite as well and no sense getting them mixed up.

Are all 147 required or are some 'optional?' I wouldn't do the optional ones until the required ones are done and maybe some of those not even then.

Re: Microsoft Updates hacked? Today and ongoing. "Security updates"

Microsoft needs to go away. 25 plus years of screwing the public over. Scourge to the computer world. Why in the world does any system need almost daily updates? Every time you want to get on your computer there's an update, which usually requires a restart, what a joke. My next computer will be apple.

Take a few minutes and read this comparison bill gates made with the auto industry. What an out of touch buffoon;

Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated: "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving twenty-five dollar cars that got 1000 miles to the gallon."
In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating (by Mr. Welch himself):
If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

* For no reason whatsoever your car would crash twice a day.
* Every time they repainted the lines on the road you would have to buy a new car.
* Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason, and you would just accept this, restart and drive on.
* Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn, would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.
* Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, reliable, five times as fast, and twice as easy to drive, but it would only run on five percent of the roads.
* The oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights would be replaced by a single "general car default" warning light.
* New seats would force everyone to have the same size butt.
* The airbag system would say "Are you sure?" before going off.
* Occasionally for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lift the door handle, turn the key, and grab hold of the radio antenna.
* GM would require all car buyers to also purchase a deluxe set of Rand McNally road maps (now a GM subsidiary), even though they neither need them nor want them. Attempting to delete this option would immediately cause the car's performance to diminish by 50% or more. Moreover, GM would become a target for investigation by the Justice Department.
* Everytime GM introduced a new model car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as in the old car.
* You'd press the "start" button to shut off the engine.
GM vs. Bill Gates - Bill gets it from GM

Re: Microsoft Updates hacked? Today and ongoing. "Security updates"

Well, Windows isn't going away and considering the statements were made 8 years ago, one might get up to date a bit. Some of them are just plain stupid and are analogies that have no rational counterpart.

I would bet that if you started putting a lot of non-GM parts on your car, you'd run into all sorts of issues. Think of all the 3rd party software a person installs on a computer. Compare that to 3rd party engine pieces that never work out-of-the-box and requires a lot of tweaking. Look at all the forums with people having issues with headers that don't fit, cams they buy that don't work well in their engines, ignition system problems with very reputable companies. Even aftermarket dress-up items that now make something else not fit or work as intended.

I don't use Unix, Linux, or any OSs like that but I'd bet their 3rd party hardware and/or software support is no where near what is available for MS products.

Lastly I'd like to ask, what do you use to start your car? A key? Now think about it, what do you use to turn that same car off?

Brob: "147 updates"--are you counting from the updates history list or from the updates installed list? My former kept growing during the recent repeat problem (thread topic), but when I checked the latter, it only showed one copy each of the repeaters...so nothing required to do, I think.

Yeah Rob ,it's quite possible you need that many depending on the original os version.
With SP1 it might be less.
If you need a copy of Win 7 w/sp1 ,here's a legal version you can d/l and use with your activation key.
