While upgrading my suspension and steering I found that my manual steering box has slop (play) in the arm movement. Can that be adjusted out or do I need to get it rebuilt or maybe its time to upgrade to power steering.
It's important to determine if the play is in the box itself or the result of wear in other components. If everything's connected, it can be tough to be sure. If the box truly has significant play, often a rebuild is necessary. But consider carefully before making a jump to power steering--a well-rebuilt steering box can make a big difference in steering performance and driver comfort.

You can adjust a Saginaw manual steering box for wear & slop removal to a point. There is a slotted bolt that protrudes through the top cover. You can turn that bolt to adjust the preload. When the bolt goes down too much, like to the level of the cover or lower, you can no longer adjust it and it must be rebuilt.
