The three wires you discussed go directly to a coil made for that dist. ( High energy one ) You then wire the coil direct from the existing wiring harness. Check the wire for voltage. It should check to be around 9 volts. If it checks 12 volts, you'll need a resistor between your 12 volt feed wire and the coil.
