Hey guys, Putting a motor together with a Unilite 4748201. The question i have is, concerning installation on a motor where I do not have a correctly installed old distributor to reference from. I had been taught to line the Oil pump drive up with the #5 intake pushrod, retard the Pointer ~a terminal and drop it in. any thoughts? Also, theres a large arrow on the module in the body itself, pointing at the rotor, and the rotor has another arrow that could line up with it. Anyone know what thats for? I had thought that it could be used for installation. but that puts the rotor back near where the terminal for #6 would be.

Here's what I do: Set cylinder number one to TDC on the compression stroke If the valve covers are off, you can see that both valves are closed. Otherwise, remove the spark plug, have a buddy put his thumb over the hole and rotate the engine until a gush of air blows his thumb off the hole. Now you can do a fine adjustment by using the timing pointer, a little advance is better than lining up the zero mark.

Now pick which terminal on your distributor is going to be your #1 terminal. line up the rotor with this terminal. Look at where the oil pump drive s in the bottom of the distributor, and with a large screw driver, turn the oil pump shaft to the same orientation. Drop in the distributor, remembering that it will rotate into place as the gears engage. If it doesn't go all the way in, you didn't get the oil pump positioned quite right, so try again. It usually takes me a couple of tweaks.

pointed the oil pump drive at the #5 intake pushrod tip. Put the rotor on the distributor at 3oclock, (assuming your looking down at the motor, the crank snout it 6 the bellhousing is 12. droped right in. a slight twist to line up a slot in the optical switch per Mallory's instructions for first start. and as it happened. #1 is what you would assume, ~5oclock on the cap. thanks for the help guys :hurray:
