I just got the 18" Mags 3" mufflers today, I'm gonna put them in my Pypes 3" system. Mufflers look top-notch.

While im no expert on this specific system from what I have heard in person. 2.5" systems are ideal for street cars and vehicles with near stock motors even a big 454. I really would only recommend a 3" system for someone looking for a loud exhaust or a max effort setup.

We put 3" on my sons 70 chevelle, it had a 502 stroked to 540, it never had the right sound, he had headers and flowmasters, it's hard to describe the sound but I'll give it my best shot, kind of like a big stove pipe, I know headers and flowmasters, 2 1/2" will have a little tin can sound if you know what I mean, thats the right sound, but the 3" had to big of a rumble, it reminded me of a leaf blower, a big dull sound. Thats just my 2 cents, oh, and the 3" are harder to fit, I would never put 3" on again.

Check this chart out and see where it leads you:

What you need will be determined by a matrix of : displacement, rpms, horsepower. When in doubt go with the smaller pipe. My 496 has 2" primaries 30" long with 3.5" collectors, I run 3.5" lead pipes off the collectors into a 3.5" X crossover and then into 3" pipes up to the Magnaflow straight through mufflers. Even though my car is now far quieter than when it had straight duals (no crossover) and Flowmaster 3 chamber mufflers - by no means is it subdued, it still sounds brutal but less nasty than before.
