Recently had my M22 completely rebuilt by a reputable shop. When shifting while car is cold, all seems ok. After the transmission warms up it wants to grind or growl when shifting into 2nd and 4th. doesn't seem to be a problem in 1st or 3rd. If I "baby" it into gear it shifts ok. (but who wants to baby a M22 into gear!)

Any ideas as to the problem?

This is a typical symptom of a clutch adjustment. Most likely the grinding is caused by the clutch not fully disengaging. Give it a try.
