So my project wagon has a pretty decent oil leak that I just discovered so I am thinking an engine overhaul is going to be the first item of business. I am seriously considering the LS1 conversion, but my only concern is the issues with the fuel pump set up. Is the intank sump the best way to go or can you just mount an external pump and be good? I know a couple of people tried the external pump and did not like it so they went internal. I gues the fuel pump issue is my only hang up right now.
I am looking to go with just a basic 5.3 set up and will probly swap the tranny as well.
Also, with an LS1 swap can I stick to the column shift. Really not ready to cut up the trans tunnel to put a floor shift in.
Anyway, any help is always appreciated.

You can stick with the column shift. Use Lokar linkage to make it simple. That is what I used with my LT1-4L60 swap in my 300 deluxe. Take a look at Tanks INC. for a new tank with the in tank pump, just make sure the tank has the well for the pump and baffles.

Would a caprice tank fit in a wagon? I wouldn't think looks would be too much of a concern and it would be pretty cheap and easy to plumb.
No the wagon tank in a Chevelle is shaped weird and mounts in the quarter panel behind the left rear wheel opening.

This is not an option...wagon tanks are not mounted underneath like a sedan...

They fit up in the left rear quarter panel in the back...

Steve I'm going to do my tank mods this weekend and I will post the results in my "Project Greenbrier" thread and in the thread I started in this section about pumps...

I have a 5.3/4l60e combo in mine...I modified the stock column linkage to work perfectly with the 4l60e. I have lots of pics...just haven't had time to post them in my build thread.

Us old guys can be sneaky fast at times :D
It is tearing me up that I can not start working on the wagon, hopefully by the end of the month work can proceed.

Hey Phillip, I noticed you were in Marana. What are you planning on doing to yours? I have the same year. Trying to come up with a plan of attack on mine. Thinking Engine and trans first.

I'm strongly considering cutting out my rear storage box area, welding in a plate and using an El Camino gas tank. Biggest issue I see would relocating the filler tube from where it is on an El Camino to the Wagons filler tube area.

Bill,
Depends on what you can do yourself. Looks more doable than some things I have seen accomplished on this site. Not easy, but doable.

Mike,
Look at a Chevy/GMC G-van (recommend late 80's on up) as these have a multi piece fuel fill setup that could probably be coaxed into working on a wagon. Still would rather work out a factory tank with an in-tank pump.

Best,
Tom

Steve engine and trans will be done first, then upgrade to 4 wheel discs, interior then paint.
