My th400 has less than 3 miles on it and when I turned the car over yesterday the trans was squealing. Goes away when I put it in Reverse, comes back in Park and Neutral. I did not drive it, just shut it down after I went through the gears.

Upon inspection there is some fluid weeping form bottom two bolts on pump in front of trans and a couple drops around the tail.

Does anyone know what is happening?

Did you install the trans in the car and index the converter? I've seen a trans squeal from not having any clearance between the torque converter hub and the trans pump/stationary shaft hub. If you didn't have to pull the converter out to meet the flexplate, this may be your problem.

Mike, based on what Ryan mentioned, I unbolted the converter from the flexplate and checked for clearance by rotating the converter and pushing back from the flexplate. To me, it feels like the converter is fully engauged on the splines down to the pump.

I am by no means a trans expert, my knoweldge is weakest here. Am i doing the right thing?

thanks Terry.

When I turn the crank by hand, with the converter bolted up to the flexplate, it does NOT hit the starter gear. ...BUT when I unbolted the converter, the flexplate touches the starter gear and it rubs as I turn the crank by hand.

So obviously, either the converter is slightly pulling the flexplate away or, the flexplate is conforming to the converter when bolted up. Is this normal?

Do these clearances change when the engine is running? Anyone encounter this before?

P.S. I did check to see if the flexplate was flush against the crank and not cocked. looks OK.

thanks.
