Just starting a 496bbc project. Nice, hot street motor nothing too radical: machine work done to my 454 2-bolt main block, eagle 496stroker kit/10.25cr, 275cc Dart pro1 oval aluminums, wieand single plane aluminum intake, comp high energy hydraulic roller lifters, scorpion 1.7I/1.75E roller rockers, Pro systems 4150 950cfm carb so far..... Talked to udHarold about a couple hyd. roller cam choices, ALL EXPERTISE with this would be greatly appreciated. Trying to achieve 600 streetable horses and hopefully higher torque(if possible). Going in a 4400# Chevy caprice 4-door with me in it. Want to run a tight 10" 25-2800 stall in a raptor 700r4. Rear end IS a Chevy 8.5/31 spline/ auburn posi/3:73. Exhaust will be Dougs ceramic coated 2" primaries 3" collectors, x-pipe, magnaflow muffs. Trying to kick some 383 and 406sbc street car buddies of mine....... Thank you guys for any input

Sounds like you have a good combo going on......with that comp. ratio, alum. heads, and a good ud Harold cam, 600hp and atleast 600lbs of torque is doable. It should pull that 4400lbs down the track fast enough......good luck with the build.

I would not want to pull up beside a 4 door sleeper with that kind of power under the hood. Some one is going to get embarrassed......

Take a look at my combo, dyno is in my signature.

Hydraulic roller, beehive springs, comp cam in the 615/620 lift range, 10.3 compression, brodix heads. Reasonably similar to what you're looking at with your 496.

One thing Mike Lewis recommended (I didn't do) but that makes a lot more sense to me now - go with a solid roller cam instead of a hydraulic. I didn't want the maintenance of setting the lash on the solids - but after checking them on this engine, it's really not a big deal at all, and the benefits of the solid roller would be (at a minimum) several hundred more rpm's up top where it's making great power. If I had it to do over again, I'd go solid roller.

Mark, that funny...I have a SR cam, and thinking of going back to a HR. Love the power of the SR, but the low-rpms of my ride kinda scare me. Your build is a great example of a maintenance-free 600+hp street motor, IMO.

my 496 combo is very close to your build in my 67ss. 10.7:1 CR. block is a 1968 - 427 factory 4 bolt bored .060 - uses low block fill. edelbrock oval ports. rods are 6.385 long. comp cam xs-290-s solid flat tappet cam. the modern solid lifter flat tappet cam is nice (think they get a bad rap myself). weiand dual plane with a 850 dp carb. made 607 hp @ 6200 rpm...627 ft/lb @ 4500rpm on the engine dyno with a 1" spacer. cam works great even with my 2075 rpm corvette stall converter. 700r4. 3.42 posi rear....nice street car....

Interesting feedback. Mine's a fantastic cruiser - until I decide to hit the "go pedal", then it just MOVES (traction is the only limitation). I would have thought the solid would maintain similar characteristics, but let me rev well past 6000 rpm's.

I would re think the squishy lifter stuff. If you are afraid of the EZ Roll solid roller stuff then I would go directly to a solid flat tappet without ever considering anything else. I've been running a sft cam for year's and valve adjustment is a non issue but the RPM's are a big plus.

Thanks guys. I'm new to this engine building stuff. Been doing a lot of reading and talking to engine builders(Scott @ dyno-flo: vegas, and a few others). The motor is going in a 1989 Chevy caprice brougham ls. I have heard some things about going solid roller and I do need the motor to be maintenance free... Don't wanna check anything but the oil :) I hope that rear end holds up, I've been told it would. Thanks for the info fellas, keep it coming.....

Mark, I got Isky's "Street" option, the orfice that pressure feeds the rollers is a bit smaller, doesn't oil the needles quite as much as the race version. They figure that with the increased oil pressure at idle and rare 7500rpm blasts needing a lot more oil, this is a good solution. I don't have mine together yet, they're the traditional needle roller that I may have upgraded to EZ-rolls before I build mine.

Walt, my motor is a low-rpm cruiser. My typical rpm range while driving normally is ~1300-2000, and some extended idiling. Not sure if this is a good idea with a SR cam, even with the EZ rolls. Problem is, I'm getting some bucking/surging down at this range with this cam...cam is probably too big, or I shoulda got this on a 112lsa. I'm gonna experiment more with carbs and my driving style, but if I cant smooth it out, I probably will got to a HR cam and a set of beehives.

I run stock power brakes. my 67ss came with them. stock brake booster/m cyl. I did have to add a vac reserviour. put it under my horns and hard piped it from the manifold tap.
btw: here are the cam specs:
comp cam 11-679-5
lift: .598 I/.598 E
dur @ .050: .252 I/.260 E
has a very sassy idle. revs way past 6k. I have taken it to about 6500 but still owe some money on the motor so dont want to break anything !! although my builder says to rev it on up....
traction is the next issue for my ol jalopy. at @ 2k it is boiling the back tires off. the low end torque of this beast seems like 2x the original 396 motor (resting in the corner of my shed)---

Trade for the EZ Roll option and don't look back.

UDHarold told me to go with a hyd. roller 241/249 @50 between 600-625 Max lift 112 lsa cam. Sounds good.

Did you put a rev kit on it? Did you install the Iksy's with EZ roll option?

I bet on a 112lsa you would be a happy camper.
