Pypes Violators work great and don't sound like everyone else. I have Pypes 3 1/2" X pipe and 3 1/2" Violator mufflers (MVR36 discontinued) on my Chevelle with a set of 304 stainless 3 1/2" tailpipes I had to fab up to complete the full system on the car. Turns a lot of heads at car shows.

If you're thinking of quieter Flowmasters the 50's are a good choice, but be aware there are two different 50's- Delta 50 and Super 50 . Super 50 is the quietest of the two.
Pypes has a good selection of mufflers. From quietest to loudest are Turbo Pro, then Race Pro. Both come in 14" & 18" lengths. Then there's Street Pro and Violator but they can be louder especially w/o tailpipes.
The Super Turbo mufflers from Dynomax are a good choice too. They come in 14,16,& 20" lengths so the longer the length the quieter. Hope this helps.

The X pipe makes a big difference in sound levels no matter which you choose.

Just a note on the X pipe. Previously I had a 3" system on my car with Stainless Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers no X pipe or H pipe. That system was much louder than the 3 1/2" Pypes X pipe with Violator mufflers.

Dynomax Super Turbo Mufflers are my next choice for my el camino to replace the blue streak glasspacks. I have flowmaster 40 series on the chevelle but as I get older I want something quieter than even those.
Aint it funny Rich how old age changes the way we once thought . I love my 70 ss Camaro full bumper 4speed.That car has the dynomax Super turbos on it .About six weeks ago we had a perfect spring like week . The previous weekend we got it running after sitting almost three years due to the Pandemic . Although i loved taking it to work all week and out at lunch plus kids asking what kind of car was it .. I came to the harsh realization that with my bad left knee and a few other maladies including the inner city traffic, that the day of the four speed is over for me anyway . I am seriously thinking of selling . The next car will be a bench seat hydromantic. nothing sits like a bench seat for comfort. the loud exhaust days are gone also. Old Age a funny thing and how you change your views on things sometimes overnight .Alex

i only can give you one advice: use straight through design mufflers. And try to install the biggest ones possible, with biggest diameter possible.

I can recommend dynomax welded. rather cheap from rockauto

Magnaflow 12578 is the largest case you can fit. I just bought new ones to replace the 22 years old ones which were starting to rust at seams ( I patched one two years ago) . Old ones were aluminized, new ones are only avail in SS. Fully welded. Nice quality. Deep mellow until WOT, as any striaght thru will be.

when you say " ends at rear end" do you mean drop downs in front of axle or out under the bumper? Most short systems that end before the rear axle under the car will put a lot of "drone" into the cabin. The exhaust hits the floor pan after it bounces off the ground.. Doesn't matter what kind of muffler it is. . Better to take the extra effort and get some tight radius bends and work it over the axle and out the back.

If you don't want it loud you will need to fabricate and install some tailpipes to get the sound out past the rear bumper. You won't be happy with any muffler if you don't.
So true. The fact that the mufflers are no where near as efficient without a good tailpipe on them is another issue.

Honestly I don't think there is enough room. The rear crossmember in front of the rear, the one the ladder bars are mounted to has no provisions for a pipe to go through it. If i ran a pipe underneath it it would sit real low.
