How does the truncklock rod connect to the lock on a '71 chevelle?

You slide the cylinder with the rod into the hole in the decklid and then there's a slide clip that go's into the notch on the back side of the cylinder. You have to look for a little opening in the decklid to get to it and that holds everything in.
