Can some one please help me locate my vin number on my 1970 402 big block. Right now on the pad on the front of the engine is the code telling me where the engine was built but no vin number. At one time I heard that vin numbers were placed else where. Where might I look? Also some one told me that at one time Chevrolet issued a Tech. service report to the factory on which engine to even place a vin number on, is this fact or fiction? The engine is in a 70 El Camino. Thanks Mike

I think I know where you read the info about some engines being stamped and some not via a Tech Service Bulletin (I read that too), but it's my understanding that all engines and transmissions were to be stamped beginning in 1968 as a federal law to help deter theft.

I know 69s at two plants (Atlanta & KC) stamped the CON VIN by the oil filter instead of the engine ID pad. According to the same source above, the 70s could be on the engine ID pad or the block at the bell housing/transmission flange. I've seen them in both locations but never did a survey to find out what plants did what.

Thanks guys. If you'd rather not give the engine ID number and at least 1st three of sequence number here I can understand. The data may be helpful in the future if plants did make a change during the year however. If you wouln't mind sending me a PM with the engine code (e.g., T1025CTW) and at least part of the CON VIN (e.g., 10B123xxx), I'd appreciate it.

Hello, here is what I have, the vin number is 136800L133513, the stamp on the engine pad on the front reads, T1014CTW appears on the side of the pad closest to the fender well and is about 1/4 inch tall. There are no other number or letters next to it. The axle code in raised letters and numbers are CCF1017B

I'm fairly sure that all the Van Nuys built 70 Chevelles and El Camino's had their VIN stamped above the oil filter. That's probably true for the Monte Carlo's as well if they were also built there.
My 70 SS 396 was built 06D and it's VIN is lightly stamped there.

The picture is rotated to make the numbers easier to see. The oil filter would be to the right if it could be seen in the pic.

I'm gonna jump in on this with some pics of my Baltimore stamps. VIN is by oil filter and I know alot of you have never seen this on a Baltimore car. I have spoken with a local guy who used to restore Chevelles and he stated he had seen them at both locations. Seeing that he lives in Maryland and not to far from Baltimore most of the cars he worked on and owned were Baltimore cars.

Dale, Are the pics clear enough for you to verify font and such?
