You might be having the same problem I had with the wiring in the consol of my 70. On mine, the wires had become entagled in the shift mechanism and the insulation had worn off of a couple of the wires causing them to ground out and cause a short. I was blowing fuses like crazy before I looked down one night to see sparks flyin under the shift indicator
I simply removed the shift indicator plate, and a little electrical tape and a couple tie wraps later I was back in business
