Well 1 month from today (12 april) we're heading down to vegas. I'm going to the NHRA race :) and the better half is going to gamble. That takes care of Saturday and Sunday, but we need something to do Friday and Monday. We arrive Thursday afternoon and leave Tuesday afternnon. Been to the musium at the Imperail :( and we have been to the Dam.

Think we may go to the Grand Canyon this time but which side is better?
Shelley also wants to do the shopping mall thing and I may try and go to the Harley dealership.

What else would you do while in Vegas? Is there any cruise nights that go on that time of year?

Drink! Casino Royale (between Harrahs and Imperial Palace) has $1 Michelob Lagers or $1.50 other bottles. Same with the Slots-A-Fun bar by Circus-Circus.

Really, I thought other than seeing the casino buildings themselves, Vegas didn't really interest me too much. I'm not huge into gambling. Maybe you could start a collection of the "cards" they hand out along the strip???

north rim of the grand canyon is beautiful, also you can head north into zion, hike the narrows (water might be a little cold) or hike "angels landing" and stand thousands of feet up and just look at the majesty of zion, there is also bryce, duck creek, etc. i'm a big fan of southern utah, lots to see....

GRAND CANYON-- You can hike to the bottom or take the mule ride to the bottom and back to the top. Trust me take the mules. Must be under 200 Lbs. for the mules. The mules are not like a ZO-6 Vett. But a lot of fun and a good way to spend a day and see some wildlife. And some big Azz "Condors"

Go to Lake Mead about 10 minutes away... they have rental boats, jetski and party barges as well. See some shows, visit the wax museum, or Ripleys Believe it not museum. Sometime about 30 minutes west of Vegas they have sandrail and ralley truck races in the desert. You usually can see them off the highway.

Walk off into the desert and pick up some peyote and build yourself a fire pit and a carve peace pipe. Then you'll know where the visions come from.

On the 15th is an Autocross event at the AFB. You can go by one of those exotic car rental places and then put it through its paces.

Or if you have the money

or

there are at least 8 different racing schools, horseback riding, climbing, rafting, jumping out of perfectly good airplanes, etc... You could also drive to State Line and there is one of the longest roller coasters in the world there.

Harley Cafe is south of Aladdin, north of MGM and the Showcase mall about 1/3 way up strip from south end. Pretty cool, it has a giant Harley comeing out of the sign above the door. NASCAR Cafe is also cool, but not open when I was there. They have a giant stock car over the bar called Carzilla.

Thanks guys.

The mule thing is out as I'm just a little over 200lb :)

Went to the Harley cafe last time and we had some great good food there.

My try the NASCAR cafe if it's open. I have been to the Race rock in Orlando and that was something else to see.

Any more votes for the North Rim. Would have liked to go to the south rim were they just finished something call the Skywalk or something like that, but at $25 to go out on it thats not bad, it's the other $75 to get on the reservation I object to.

you might want to check into getting a multipass, you will be close to several national parks, and for what you pay to get into the grand canyon, you might want to hit a few others. last summer i took a friend from canada to zion, bryce, and the north rim, he still hasn't stopped talking about it, he especially liked riding threw the virgin gourge, and wants to go back and hike the narrows again.... http://www.nps.gov/zion/

The road to the North Rim is closed most of the winter due to snow. You might want to check and see if it's going to be open by the time you are going to the area.

Check out the car collection at the Imperial Palace, 3rd floor I think. a few hundred cars, get the free coupon by applying for a casino club card and ask for the coupon book. saves you 7 bucks i think. Only 2 Chevelles there though....

Saw it last month, not worth it I thought. There's a coupon in one of the local freebie tourist mags for free. just bring coupon to desk.

Went there the last time we were in Vegas (we were staying at the Imperial any way), and thought it was a waste of time too.

have they changed it or something? i haven't been in a couple years, but last time i was there, they had some really neat cars. a lot of duesenberg's, and don't they have one of hitler's cars, and at that time i think bonnie and clydes shot up car was there...there wasn't much in the muscle car line, but there were several hundred nice classics. maybe it's changed...

The wife and I go every 3-4 years and always stay at the IP. My son and his wife work out there now so I'll probably be going more often. Anyway, the auto displays at the IP change frequently. Last time I was there in October most of the older classics like Duesenbergs were gone and the entire right side, as you go in, was opened up. Had some older GP style race cars. I see different cars every time we go out there.

If you haven't been in a couple of years, there's always new hotes going up. Bellagio's fountain display is pretty impressive - every 15 minutes I think. The main lobby has some gorgeous hand blown colored glass lighting. I wasn't real impressed with the Venetian and their gondolas. Can you believe the Coast Guard made them put seat belts in the gondolas? I can see the safety concerns but it just struck me as humorous when I saw them. The outside of the place doesn't seem like it's kept up very well. Ceasar's shopping plaza is always interesting with the animated fountain characters.

Hoover Dam is always a good visit. They've blocked off heavy trucks from going across the dam and are building a new traffic bridge across the gorge. Not sure when it's suppose to be done but that's got to be one scarry drive across the gorge.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is a nice afternoon drive. Just west of Vegas on Blue Diamond Road - probably 20-25 miles. A very scenic drive around the inside of the canyon at 25-35 mph and rest areas to pull off and enjoy the scenery.

I've been to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon a couple of times but never made the trek to the North Rim. They're both about the same driving time from Vegas according to my son - about 4 hrs I think.

Have a great trip.

Thanks Dale.
We could not get the Imperial this time. So we are at the Stratosphere.
People Shelley works with can not get a room down there right now. Is there something other than the NHRA race going on?
