Hey guys, I have a Toshiba laptop that's running vista..For some reason every now and again it just goes black, looks like it's in some kind of hibernation mode but I have yet to find a way to wake it up without completely re-booting it..

Any suggestions?

TIA,
Scott

No, I have to force it into a reboot so it gives me that DOS looking screen where it asks me if I want it to start in safe mode etc. I should have said it appears to be in hibernation mode, but I haven't been able to get to come back on without holding down the power button.. There really doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason for when it does it, just usually when I'm deep into a conversation in TC chat..

And Brad, how did I know you were going to say that,lol..

As opposed to increasing my post count by being totally non-productive and offering no solutions...I'll try to help.

Some PC's simply don't like going into hibernation or even powering down certain devices.

Have you looked at the power settings?
* Right-click desktop and select Personalize
* Click Screen Saver
* Click the Change power settings... link
* Regardless of current setting, click Change plan settings link

Personally, I set everything to Never but check the settings for the display and see if the time currently selected coincides with the screen going blank with no activity.

You might also check the Help & Support for 'sleep mode' or 'hibernate' to get some ideas of what settings affect what.

A PC's BIOS and even video cards can also affect sleep mode.

My Toshiba did that. It was a Sattelite M35X. The power light would go from it's normal blue to a flashing orange and the screen would go blank (like stanby mode). Ended up being a bad main board. I had to replace it. Works good now.

Scott,
I have a Core Duo Toshiba Notebook running XP and have the same issues. I have found if I use a slower "Toshiba Power Saver setting"(changed from a 6 to a 4) it never happens. It may be heat related. I took my computer apart to verify the fan wasn't plugged up. It wasn't. So far I'm thinking the graphics chip on the motherboard gets too hot and the screen goes dark. Not off. It still has a glow, but glows dark gray. Reboot is required to clear the problem. Shutting the lid doesn't do anything. If you find out what is happening and how to fix it let me know. For now, if I need the speed I turn it up, otherwise I run it on setting 4.
Take Care...

No, it was 2 years old at the time. So to fix it, I bought a used Toshiba M35X that had a bad harddrive and a bad monitor for cheap. I swapped out the mainboard and it has been running fine ever since.
