You guys have been such a great help, I'm back with a new question. This is for a 68 chevelle without air. Before I take the kick panels off, Would anyone know how much depth there is behind them for speaker mounting? I've seen the aftermarket panels that have the speakers already built in but have heard mixed reviews. I've also read that the drivers side has issues with the parking brake. I would like to mount my own 6-1/2 in round speakers into factory kick panels. Thanks again

That depends on if you plan to keep the vents or fill them with speakers. The vent holes and space behind them are HUGE (as in they are open all the way to the outside fender sheetmetal).

If you keep the vents, then it gets more difficult as I think you will have to cut sheetmetal for the speakers.

Yes the parking brake will cover part of the DS speaker.

Thunder, What made you decide to go with the aftermarket kick panel speakers rather than mount the speakers within your existing kickpanels and just cut a hole?
the aftermarket panels are thicker and more sturdy, this reduces distortion (the reason for buying audio mat products to go behind door panels and such), also would have been work and a waste IMO to cut factory panels

I also like they have a slight tilt to send more sound at passengers instead of straight across

Also my speakers have large magnets and it would have been a lot of cutting, much easier to buy these and cut out 1 piece of metal on each side

for $70 I saved myself a lot of trouble and I even sold the factory panels for what repros cost to a local guy so the news ones helped pay for themselves

but again my car is a 71...if they say the ones for a 68 might block to brake you might look into it more, but mine are a perfect fit and I've very happy with them, nice and clean looking

I mounted 4.5 inch round speakers into the kick panels of my 69 cutlass, which should be almost identical to chevelle.
The first time, I mounted them behind the air vents that exist in the kick panels because I did not want to cut the original panels. But it was alot of work to modify the vent, which was not functional after that.
After I year, I removed them from the air vents and bought another set of original kick panels. I cut a hole for the speakers in the kick panel, in front of the air vents (non air car), and put the speaker into the hole and used the mesh cover that came with the round speaker. It cleared the parking brake pedal, just barely. I like the sound much better from this set. I think I had to cut a bit of metal with my air saw to have the speaker recess enough into the kick panel metal. But not much metal had to be removed at all. There is a big hollow area there. I got my second set of kick panels from a junk yard for 15 bucks, so I didn't go for the moulded custom autosound style. I thought they wouldn't sell them without speakers installed. I think you could easily mount 5 inch round into the original kicks. Not sure about 6 inch, but probably. The back side metal may have to be cut to get the magnet into the hollow, but that shouldn't stop you. Go for the sound, it's wonderful to crank tunes on an old car.

Here is a pic of my 68 vert. The holes were as is when I bought the car. It did not come with the speakers or grilles. I hope this helps.

You guys have been a great help, Thanks!! So it appears that once I remove the kick panel, there is metal that has to be cut, regardless. From the picture, it looks like there are 2 layers of sheet metal?

Hey Tony;
I plan on adding front speakers aswell........ but I plan on forgoing with all the work and heartache with kick panel speakers, and buying a front center speaker replacement which is designed to original spec's and containes 2 stereo 25w speakers set at a slight angle for separation. I found it in The Paddock catalog, $39.95 ......

From what I have heard that speaker setup is junk. You would be better off to build your own with quality speakers.

I have something very similiar in my '68 El Camino that I built myself. A couple of Pioneer 4.5" coax speakers in a wooden ported box mounted in the factory speaker location. Not exactly the best stereo separation or bass response. But then that is what the 6x9s behind the seat are for :)

Custom Auto Sound sells the panels without the speakers for about $70 but of course, not for the 68 Chevelle. I did see the dual speaker that fits the original dash mono application and also heard the standard sounds terrible. They also offer a Kenwood upgrade and was wondering if that is any better. Also, if I do decide on the aftermarket panels with the speakers, do I still have to cut sheet metal? I guess I can always call them and ask

While I've still got your ear, the kick panels also have an upgrade option to pioneer speakers for a few more bucks. Do you know if these would be decent? I guess I can always call them and ask what the output is on the pioneers.

the pioneers the sell are the lowest grade pioneer offers, thats why they sell them...the magnets are small enough to fit

I wanted high end 3 ways instead of low end 2 ways

I advise against them, any modern decent cd deck will blow them out in a week since most put out 50x4 these days
