I have just removed the kick panels out of my 70 Malibu. I looked all over to find rope calking similiar to what was on the panels but I can not find it. All I could find was the black rope calking that really does not seem to have the same characteristics of the old stuff. Black stuff was more like a sponge type where as the old was like a putty. So I was wondering if I could just use plumbers putty? Seems like a trivial question but I do not want wet carpet every time I wash the old girl. Thank you all for your help, you have been an excellent source of info to a rookie trying to restore his first car. God Bless you all.

I found the rope putty at ACE Hardware stores. That was a few years ago. They had both the thick and thin sizes. The plumbers putty should work as well.
