Watching a rerun on motor trend tv of Junk Yard gold there was a episode last night with a single junk yard with two Impala SS 427, a 69 Impala wagon 427 and a few SS396 Chevelles in the yard. And they where mostly complete cars. In this day and age how is this possible given the rarity of those cars. I almost think it was staged. As the hood alone on the 67 Impala 427 is worth well over 3k. Your thoughts?

Its television so anything is possible. Probably not a real situation but possible.

I would bet the cars & parts are not staged. I'm sure Steve is quite knowledgeable, but he prolly looks up the stats in order to be correct before they film him reciting numbers.
Steve goes to these yards that are so rural I'm thinking they do not do widespread online selling; hence these good finds still there. I betcha these very rural yards are not into shipping large hoods and heavy steel across the country.

it would seem these cars would have been restored years ago and not left in the yard. that is my point.

I can't believe someone ( scrap yards) has old junk cars lying around, not wanting to sell them, just waiting for a TV show to film them.
With the thousands of cars that were produced over the years, there has to be some left in junk yards. IMO
I watched that episode also last night. Nice to see Chevelle's on the tube.

Finding small V8 run of the mill cars in scrap yards is very common. Or use to be But finding cars with very limited production numbers and collectable status is very rare.

I must admit this is one of my favorite Motor Trend TV shows. There's something about roaming junkyards, and to find these yards with 60's cars; Brilliant!

I have a yard like this near me, but all the cars are sunk deep into the ground here in the Northeast. But I did find some nice stainless trim for my 66!

those are specialty yards, and I'm sure the owners have a specialty price on those cars. I'm sitting across a vintage yard right now with a ton of 30s and 40s stuff. jim

I used to shop junk yards back in the 80's when there were still a lot of 60's cars in them. Many times I left without the parts I found because they wanted too much money. A lot of them are just hoarders that don't want to sell anything.

I love that show. The only way that show is staged is if they have found a way to make dead grass grow up quickly around the parking spots in the yard. Yes, I bet the prices are high on these vehicles and their parts.

Great show and he is very knowledgeable.

Over priced is likely it. How many people are seeing stuff go across the block on Mecum or Barret Jackson seeing similar cars fetch 6 figures... thinking their junk car has got to be worth at least 40K because of that.

I recall an older episode of Chasing Classic Cars where some guy had a Mercedes 300SL roadster. Wayne was interested, but the guy was insisting on 300K for the car -- in junk condition!

Great show. That is one of the auto programs that I really like, seems it would be quite hard to stage a show like that, as B52bombardier said in an earlier post.

I also notice a lot of those cars have bucket seats, but try finding a set at a reasonable price when you need them. jim

Up until about 5 years ago there was a wrecking yard near me that specialized in pre-1980 cars. Maybe a thousand cars. It was there forever and got new cars all the time. From where I have no idea.
When the owner died his daughter crushed and sold the entire yard to a metal scrapper and started restocking with late models. No one knew this was happening.
I went there at the time without knowing and the yard (maybe 10 acres?) was practically empty with a few late models. It’s now full again with late model crap.

that yard is old and out of the way;
there used to be many of the older yards in NM that i would see, and visit.
why these 427ss cars could still be there would be
that would have been much bigger yards in Las Cruces an in El Paso
although most all yards had a hotline for certain parts you were looking for prior to internet:)
pretty nice show, as most yards scraped everything they had when metal prices jumped up...

There used to be a yard near me with all pre 80’s stuff. (Back to the 40’s). Probably 40 acres) I went by about 10 years ago and not one car left. All crushed.🤬

Only way one is going to get a set of bucket seat cores today is from someone that has no idea of what they are. There is a set of cores on my local Craigslist which I think are 66 seats but cant be sure because the single picture in the ad is poor. Seller is asking $1,200.00 for the cores.

I enjoy the show also. I have Magnantes book "1001 Muscle Car Facts". He seems to be knowledgeable and does his research. Really enjoyed the book , it is divided by manufacturers. I believe it came out in 2013. Did find a couple of things I would like to question him about.

There was a yard about 10 miles from me called Glory Days, but most of what they had was 1980s... just a few cars from 60s/70s. Shutdown just a few years back. No idea what happened to the inventory. I kept saying to myself I was going to go take a look to see what was available... just kept putting it off... then it was too late.
