Have a pair of laptops running Windows 7 and Firefox 20.

Had the same problem on these computers with earlier versions of Firefox.

When I open a new window by clicking on a link, or whatever, as soon as the new window is finished loading--Firefox instantly switches back to the previously-viewed window often, but not all of the time. Damned annoying.

Any idea how I can open a new window and have Firefox actually stay on that window?

In Firefox menu. mouse over "Options", then select "Options" and in that window click on the "Tabs" tab. Put a check mark in the " Open new window in a new tab instead" box and put check mark in "When I open a new tab, switch to it immediately" box. That will set you up for tab browsing instead of opening new windows. I find that I like it more and more all the time. Hope this helps. Oh, the Firefox menu is that little "down arrow" at the upper left of the screen in the orange box with Firefox in it.

Bringing this back. Since previous post have upgraded a time or two, currently running Windows 7, Firefox 23.0.1. Problem is still unsolved. May have gotten worse, or I may just be getting more annoyed.

I open a link in a new window--either deliberately or because the link is programmed to open in a new window. New window pops up, just like it should. As soon as the page finishes loading, though, Firefox switches back to the page I just came from. This does not happen EVERY time, but happens perhaps 50% of the time.

On the other hand, if I go to close a window by mousing over and then clicking on the "X" at the upper right corner of the screen, about 5% of the time I end up closing the page I've just come from, NOT the page I'm actually on and wanting to close. I may not have been on that previous page for five--ten minutes, but it may still close that previous page instead of the current page.

It's like Firefox is possessed by a Poltergeist, who is changing my windows kind of at random, but always under the same circumstances. Virus? Bug? I have no idea.

For the record, I DESPISE tabs/tabbed browsing, I'd do away with them completely if I could. I even e-mailed Mozilla asking how to utterly disable tabs, but I never got a reply.

I see a similar issue on the GF's laptop but only when using the touchpad.
When I plug in a mouse the issue stops.
Have you tried a mouse yet?
Possibly the issue on her laptop is in the touchpad drivers but reluctant to screw whit her 'puter as she has enough issues using it in it's current config. ;)
Try disabling Flash and see if it helps.

Forgot to add that this is occurring in IE on her's and not FF.
