I've been reading a little here and there but now that I picked up a 70 chevelle and a parts car, it's time to get going. I'm doing a ground up build without enough money to do it, so it should be a headache. Bittersweet, but I wouldn't have it any other way, unless I had money, then I'd do it all right.

So, if anyone has any tips for me as far as doing something right the first time that I may miss, feel free to let me know. I'll be moving slowly in the build so other that the bead blasting the frame is about to get, I'm not jumping into anything.

One question, what is a good and relatively cheap way to coat the frame? Por-15, do-it-yourself undercoating/bedliner, or what? Thanks in advance

The best piece of advice you can get about doing a frame up..."right"./ apparently you already know.. You came here... Just to start you... If its a frame on...you go with a sanding and po15...then a paint.. If frame off... many choices ,lately galvanizing seem in fad and of course you have powder coat.. In essense.. I read here all the info on a particular subject,,ie.. suspension,,steering.. whatever.. Then I look at my budget and capabilities, then choose .. So my friend ask specific questions after.. after researching here, then choose... At least thats what I do... good luck and welcome phil

Hello and welcome Bob. Are you going for a Concourse show car restoration or a Driver resto? That would dictate what you should use.

Welcome, Bob! Tim's question is right on target. You mentioned you plan on driving it every day; that's key. You're not going to want to invest the time and money into something that you're going to "ruin" with road grime and rock chips.
As for your comments about budget, you and I are in much the same boat. I have 4 cars in the driveway and my wife stays at home full-time with our kids. Until such time as they're both in school there's only one income and the Chevelle is last on the $ priority list! I will say that it is unquestionably one of the best things for me since it forces me to be actually "restore" rather than replace, to be creative in fabricating wherever possible, and to carefully consider purchases before I make them. I tend to be a little impulsive with cash in hand! Oh well!
Good luck and post some pix!

Thanks guys, yeah it's a frame off restro for a driver. I just can't see spending all that money to get it to original, it's just for me to enjoy, not for other people to judge. I separated the frame and the body yesterday and should blast it this week after work hopefully. I want to get something on it as soon as I can though.

I do have some DTM (direct to metal) paint that I got from Sherwin Williams a while back, and was told it's pretty good stuff. I'm not sure if it's strong enough or if it will chip under everyday use. But I already have it so it's basicly free, but I don't want to halfas* it.

What do you think?
