Received my Lunati 60203 cam and lifter set on Thursday. I was looking at the lifters today and one of the lifters doesn't sound the same as the others. While shaking the lifters you can hear a rattle inside the lifter; i guess it is the plunger, check ball or whatever meters oil in the lifter. All of them rattle except one, there is no sound coming from this lifter. Is this lifter a potential problem? Should I swap out the set or will it be okay to use. These lifters also have more swirls on the face than others I have used in the past. A search mentioned the swirls were to hold the oil on the lifter and not a problem, is that correct? Thanks.

Try pumping them up in some motor oil.

I got the cam from Summit and since everthing is new I didn't want to start taking it apart. Fortunately I am local to Lunati so I went by there today and asked them to look at the lifters. Told them I didn't feel comfortable using them and they swapped out the entire set. New set seems fine.

Just a thought here, this is not just the 1st or 2nd i have read here in team chevelle over thew past 5-6 months where people had issues with Lunati hyd flat tappet hyd lifters prior to but mostly durring and or just post breakin making too much noise & or collapsing and Lunati would swap them out no questions asked.

Dont get me wrong, thats good customer service BUT what the heck is going on with the hyd flat tappet lifters at Lunati to cause mult issues here in team chevelle over past 5-6 months ? And remember this is just me noticing it here & i am sure that me/1 person alone is not seeing the full scope of of this issue either.

Since Lunati has been so good about swaping them out each this each time with basically no qurestions asked when i read about people having issues with thier Lunati flat tappet lifters here in teacm chevelle that makes me think they know they have issues with them ,why is that, are Lunati's hyd flat tappet lifters mfg'd overseas or in the USA,i don't know?

BTW,some people posted back after installing the replacmenet lifters that all was ok and noise was gone or new lifters stoped leaking/collapsing and all was ok . Now thats with nothing else being done to the motors other then in stalling the replacment lifters from lunati to swap out noisey and or collapsing hyd lifters which showed the prior thought to be bad hyd lifters were in fact defective in the 1st place.

Now that makes me wonder whats going here with the mult lunati hyd flat tappet lifter fails i saw here in team chevelle. But i have no idea where Lunati is getting their flat tappet lifters from these days and with these issues going on it has definately made me think twice before suggesting anyone use Lunati flat tappet hyd lifters at this time untill this calms down or better yet i see something from Lunati stating they knew that had some issues and corrected the situation.

Just wondering, does anyone eles know for 100% sure where Lunati is " currently " getting thier hyd flat tappet lifters from that this time (Johnson ?/overseas?) and also if Lunati has admitted to this issue with respect to what seems to be at least a small run of defective hyd flat tappet lifters comming from their house?

And before i get slammed for overeacting i don't think Lunati having 3+ sets of DEFECTIVE hyd flat tappet lifters out there in a few months time is overeacting or nothing to be concerned about.

Thats esp true if your one of the unlucky people with the defective lunati lifters that had to go thru all the work to install the replacement lifters and sweat out breaking in more new lifters on a now semi new/partially used cam that was already broken in with 16 other different lifters that unfortunaqtely ended up being defective hopeing this 2nd set of new lifters for breakin on the semi new/semi used cam would be successfull a 2nd time not wiping out any lobes this time arround.

But in this case here who knows, since the lifters were never run/used Lunati could very well ship the returned/swapped out lifters to next person ordering a cam/lifter kit so he can install them in his motor to s ee if the lifters are in fact ok with no issues.

Scott, thanks for your input. I am not rushing to put this thing together so I may wait for other comments on potential issues. I don't know if the lifter was defective or not but I didn't want to take the chance. The lobe on this 60203 looks pretty aggressive so I want to be cautious. BTW, I asked for the specs on the Lunati engine break in lube...after searching for a while, the guy couldn't find anyone that had the info.
