Has anyone found where I can buy a set of 3.31 gears for a 12 bolt. I've founnd 3.08,3.42 and 3.73. Thanks

New??? Not that I am aware of, if you have to have 3.31's I would look around for a good used set. :yes: Otherwise use the 3.42. :thumbsup:

Doesn't look like anyone has new.
Heard some rumors about new production but nothing yet.
Try craigslist or e-bay as they seem to have quite a few used sets.

Tom's Differentiuals had a deal with US Gear a few years ago to start making new 3.31 gears, but it never went through as far as I know. There are several good used sets around.

How much rotational angular "slop" would you say that a good set of used 3.31's may have and still be called good??

You know, like steering wheel play sorta deal here...

An 1/8th???? Maybe a 1/4"?????

The difference is not that great between a 3.31 and a 3.42. You can get a bigger change by just changing the diameter of your tires. I would go with new gears every time!

I've found that .010 to .012 backlash is normal for used GM gears.

You will never know the difference between a 3.42 and a 3.31.

not much diff. 3.331/3.42 if you must have 3.31 you could go with a 1 inch taller tire using the 3.42 and should bring you back to a 3.32 final drive.

That all depends on the gear ratio. It will be more with a 4.10 that with a 2.73.

Pull the cover and put an indicator on it. Pretty easy job, and that way you will KNOW what you have.

There isn't really any way to check the backlash at the pinion gear. If you want to check the backlash then you need to remove the cover, strap the pinion so that it can't move at all, and then check the backlash at the ring gear.
