I am currently running an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake on my Beaumont. The intake is about 1/4 to 1/2 inch too high so the air cleaner lid hits the hood. I need an intake with close to the same performance that will fit under the hood. The engine is a .060 over 427, 10.7 compression, Crane hydraulic cam with 533 lift and 282 duration, 840 cast square port heads, 850 Holley and a TH400 transmission with 3000 stall converter.
Thanks, James

I amy be way off on this, but perhaps it would be less expensive to have a machine shop just mill the intake down the distance you need.

I know I saw Troy Trepannier do that on a number of engines because he doesn't like to use cowl induction hoods on his cars, so he mills them down to get the correct fit.

Do you have a low profile air cleaner?
Yes. I thought about a shorter filter but don't want to restrict the air flow. I am using the 3 inch K&N filter.

I thought the same thing. I milled a intake for a guy 2 or 3 weeks ago and it is a simple setup, easy to machine and shouldn't cost much.
I have used a drop based aircleaner and a 2 inch element for hood clearance in the past.
I ran a modified old LS6 high rise and then upgraded to a ported Victor junior and really lost on that swap. The old dual plane LS6 thinking back really worked well for me.
If you ever want to run nitrous you can also bury the spray bar directly in the intake for added clearance.

The big block in my '69 has an AirGap on it. Had a 3/4" drop base, lid just rubbed cross bracing. Found a 1.25" drop base. On another note, I replaced all my body bushings with new rubber when I did the body off frame. I did have to shim the core to get things aligned when it hit me how easy it would have been to just shim the entire body up 1/2" or so for added clearance - hood, tires/wheels.

James,
You'll need to use a drop center air cleaner assembly not a shorter filter.
Something like this 1" drop offered from summit...

I guess I should have read a little better. I have the drop center air cleaner not the low profile one. I'm not sure how much of a drop it has but the lid just does rub the hood and I have a nice little indention in the air cleaner lid.

Where did you find the 1.25" drop base?

GM Performance Parts intake part number 12363406 (assuming you need an oval port intake). This manifold is almost exactly like a Performer RPM but it is shorter, short enough to fit under a 64/65 hood with a drop base air cleaner so it should work just fine for you. In fact, I'd lay good money that this manifold is cast by Edelbrock for GM. You can see what it looks like on my wagon web site listed in my signature line.

The best price I've seen for these manifolds is on www.gmpartsdirect.com. Just enter the part number for a good photo and run down on the manifold.

He's got the square port heads. What about the GM aluminum high rise dual plane # 3933163,this is probably low enough and was used on the 375 HP 396 and the 425 HP 427.This is what I have on my 454 and it seems to work pretty good,at least up to 6-6500 RPM.

Yep, that same manifold is available from GM in a rectangular port version too. (Looks like I missed the comment that they are square port heads, sorry.)

The same manifold in rect. port would be part #19131359.

The Chevy 163 intake is a lot better than most people think. The Clarys on www.yenko.net run low 12s with a certified stock 427 in a '69 Camaro. Our stock L78/L72 setup has less than half inch clearance between the breather and hood. You can buy the later 163 intakes used for a couple of hundred dollars at swap meets.

I only had about an 1/8" clearance between the hood and air cleaner. Even though the car has solid motor mounts, it is a little close for me. I just bought the car and havent driven it yet. I found a carb with no choke horn, cut about 1/4" from the bottom of the air cleaner (it is already a lowered style). Then using a ball peen hammer I dimpled the area where the float adjusters are. Now I have almost a 1/2" clearance.

I bought a k/n top filter but it was too thick. Using a smaller filter with the choke horn on the carb worried me about not getting enough air to the primaries.

We'll see how it all works tommorrow. Gonna fire it off for the first time after work!!!!!!! :beers:
