My chevelle is fine but my girlfriends 92 camaro isnt. Coolant has been disapearing for a while now and now oil showed up in the coolant. She had it towed and the shop told her it was the intake gasket and not the head gasket. can they actually know this without taking everything apart. They said they can tell from some minor coolant leakage in the rear of the intake. They also said her radiator was shot from putting stop leak in the radiator.Should she get a 2nd opinion or will it be more obviuos when they disassemble it.

Yes you can determine it is not a head gasket by doing a leak down test. By process of elemination intake sounds logical.

Don't what to say about the stop leak. I'd rather shoot myself than believe that stuff works and lasts.

The only thing they did was a visual inspection and said it was the intake and not a head gasket. I just didnt know how they can judge it that way? They said it was because of some obvious external coolant that was leaking behind the intake.. That car has alot of very minor external gasket leaks from everywhere though. My concern is they will put a new head gasket in and that will not be the major problem.

It is very common for those late model engines to leak at the rear of the intake and would be easily detected cause the rear of the engine would be NASTY, those intakes are aluminum and expand and contract differently than cast iron. Can't say if the rad is shot though, stop leak could mess it up.
