I just took off a 1977 63 amp alternator off of my 68 chevelle 396. The pigtail has one clip with two prongs. The prongs off this 1977 alternator stick out of the top side of alternator. On 77 alt, the two prongs are identified as 1 and 2. From #1, a wire from pigtail #1 runs to "Bat" label screw on back of Alternator. Another wire runs out of entire wire (unmarked) and also goes to "bat" label screw on back of alternator. Then all wires are taped and go to driver side of car. (I assume one goes to battery, one to ground, and other two go to F and 2 on Regulator. I have not untapped large "main" wire from alt to driver side.

Now my problem is, I am installing correct dated alternator 1968 42 amp and on back of this correct alternator, pigtail prongs are different, smaller, placed directly on back of allternator with 2 prongs labeled F and R. Also "Bat" post on back as well as "Grnd" post on back. So I purchased "correct" pigtail from auto zone for $1.95, it appears to fit smaller opening, has 2 wires to it, but I have tried to plug into alternator does not fit. (I am thinking to sand down plastic boot to this pigtail a bit, it should slide on). Ok.... What should I do to complete this? Can I connect somehow without untapping entire large bundled wire leading to driver side and then splitting off to regulator and to interior of car? Thanks, Dave

The 1977 alternator would have a internal voltage regulator, wiring for it would not go to the external regulator (probably mounted to the core support near your drivers headlights)

Sounds like you know where your wires need to terminate on the regulator. Do you have a service manual for your car? Look at the color codes for the alternatgor wires you need and see if you can still locate them in the harness.

One other thing. Is your alternator mounted on the passenger side now? If it is the brackets are not date correct either. You'll need to switch back to a short water pump and change all your engine brackets as well.

This is actually for a 67, but yours should be pretty similar.

PS thank Dale for his excellent 67 Chevelle site - Ive used that schematic section more times than I can count while away from my books at home.

i got lucky....i think. i have not hooked correct 68 alternator yet, but i think i will be ok. my plan was to take all electrical tape all the way back to regulator, but after about 3 inches, i found the original 2-prong "clip" along with green wire. So I repaired one of the leads going into the clip where the 77 had spliced into. My plan now is to simply connect 2-prong clip into alternator, red to battery on back of alternator and green to ground on back of alternator. it will be a few days now, i am replacing battery, carb, intake, etc. thanks for all your help. dave
