Something as simple as this?

Went to install the steering column seal at the fire wall today and tore it. The hole is smaller than the diameter of the column but I expected that it would stretch. My down fall was trying to get it over the arm for the shift linkage.

What am I missing here? Anyone had any luck with this installation?

I also tore my aftermarket seal. The seal isn't much more than styroform. The trick is to be very careful putting it on the correct position on the column before you put the column in the car. Having said that I took the torn seal, used it as a template and cut a new seal out of an old wet suit. Inner tube rubber might work. Its better than the seal from the repro stores.
