We have a stock TH400 to use with a BBC 460 (550-600 torque) and we would like to use a transbrake and reverse valve body.

What others have to change too? ... What brand advise?

(you may see this question obvious. bu, we don't have experience with automatic transmissions.)

You should only need a early style direct clutch housing(drum)with a smooth bearing race and a 34 element intermediate sprag(borg warner).

I have a TCI trans brake in mine, and it seems to work pretty good.

Is this a drag car or street car?
I would recomend keeping a standard valvebody if a street car. This will keep your 2nd gear engine braking and variable pump pressure.
Either way not too much to upgrade. GM did a fine job with the TH400.
Early drum and upgrade to the 34 element sprag. Or I think you can use one
out of a 4l80E.
Setup clearances properly.
Follow directions with valvebody/transbrake of your choice.
I am running a Coan t-brake reverse pattern valve body with a custom pressure regulator spring. (Less psi. than Coan's) Drive it on the street and has been behind my old 454 and now behind my 496 for 3 years. Pulled it apart 2 years ago and it looked like new.

Jakeshoe on here has some good info out there also. And maybe will see your post and chime in here.

.
I know nothing about variable pump pressure, but I just want to point out that when I purchased the TCI competition model TH400 transmission which I have in my car now, not only did it come with a full manual valvebody and a transbrake, but TCI told me at the time of the purchase that this transmission has engine braking in second gear only. So what Brian is saying in the quote above about not having engine braking in second gear I believe will only apply to some aftermarket valvebodies, and not all of them.

Now that TH400 transmission sold by Rossler is said to be one of the best around for high horsepower applications.

My TCI trans brake does not have engine braking in 1st or 2nd on my th-400, but it does in 3rd.

Is yours a reverse shift pattern also?

Yes it is. The trans itself also has a 300M input shaft, and a modified front drum. It isn't the run of the mill TCI trans like one of their "Streetfighter" line. It's a competition model.

Thanks....

some more doubts about automatic transmissions:
Difference between footbrake and transbrake in performance and chassis setup.:)
The transbrake embarrass the normal use in highway or street (full manual, of course);)
How choice a shifter? (many brands... many models per brand)

IMO a transbrake will not effect street unless your using it at every stop light like some people do, not saying any names about who does :)

A transbrake is a manual shift and as far as i know they all are engine braking in high gear only

JW Transmissions makes an excellent transbrake for street/strip and bracket race.

I will be trying the NEW TCI Clean Nuetral brake which is P-N-1-2-3-N so we can pull Nuetral after lifting in high gear with the aluminum rod engine

As far as torque converters go, ATI is widely regarded as one of the best, if not THE best manufacture of torque converters. I cannot say that I've ever purchased an ATI converter myself, but I've heard many drag racers rave about the ATI Treemaster converters.

http://www.atiracing.com/products/tc/tc.htm

I have a TCI torque converter,(TCI not to be confused with ATI ) but it is not one of their run of the mill ordinary models. It's one of their PRO-X torque converters which are made for competition use, and is intended to hold up to big inch/high torque engines.
