Wow a 73 Impala. That is one fast Imp.My family had a 73 4dr Impala and it got handed down to 3 drivers total including me. What a barg that was, that front bumper was a wrecking tool just waiting to smash something that just happened to get in its way !!!!!!

That car is quick for the size. I got a 79 box 2 door Caprice I am putting at least a 496 in. I already got the 8.5 10 bolt at the shop so they could put my 4.30 gear in it. What gear are you running?

I once saw an early seventy's Impala run into the rear end of a 59 Chevy Biscayne, it destroyed the front end of the Impala and barely hurt anything on the '59. It even knocked the radiator out of the newer car. Not nearly as strong as you might assume.

These cars only weigh about 4200 lbs., none are anywhere near 5000 lbs., much less 5500 lbs. That is as heavy as a large early seventies model Suburban, no way.

It has boxed frame. 9" rear with backbrace. 4L80e. Merlin Pro block. Extra fuel cell/pump for the nitrous. Stainless exhaust. Power seats/windows/locks. 300+lbs stereo. Noise killer from windshield to rear bumper doors and quartes. Big Brakes.
I had it on scales 2481kg/5469.66lbs with full tank of gas and me.

Harold with all due respect you probably saw a 71 or a 72 Impala. The 73 to 75 Impala/Caprice is one of the most sought after cars for Demo derby,if they can be found after all this time.In the 73 they came out with a DOT law that said any car sold in the US must be able to survive a 5mph crash without sustaining any damage in a frontal crash. The 73 cars had the front bumpers and the 74's had 5mph bumpers front and rear.Started with the front of full size cars in 1973 but by 1975 all domestic cars had to comply front and rear. Those bumpers were full steel on the Impala and if you hit something with that bumper you caused plenty of damage.
Here's an example of a 5 MPH bumper :http://wikicars.org/en/Image:1973_chevrolet_monte_carlo.jpg
I couldn't find an Impala or Caprice image
