Did another oil change and found shavings in the oil filter element. Took the shavings to my engine builder and he confirmed that the engine needs to come out. I am gonna pull the engine and take it to him , a task I am certianly not excited about. It will be a pain I'm sure and with my recent paint job it will make matters worse. I guess I am looking at a "freshening " up.

Well that sucks....Im not sure if I missed an earlier post, but what sort of problems were you having that you found metal shavings? I see you have a roller cam, so it's obviously not the usual flat tappet cam problems. What made you look? Well as you said, now you have an excuse to get a few new things...and watch that paint!!

Yeah, we put in a distributor gear that was not compatible with the billet roller cam. It ate up the dizzy gear and send shavings through my engine. Since the first oil change where I discovered shaving and then looked at the dist. gear this is the second oil change and still found shavings . He appeared to be willing to help with this dilema but I don' t know if he will foot the bill or I will end up paying for everything. It won't be as costly as before but still I won't be happy if I have to pay for everything. I mean he was that stated he would turn in a running engine. He stabbed the dizzy and he obviously through a brain fart regarding the gear used. I haven't verbally stated that he is to blame and don't really want to go there. I just want to fix my engine and get back to racing soon! I've got my '94 lt1 that I can still play around with in the mean time but it ain't no 496 :D . I love the big block torque.

I'm hoping not to much damage was done . I might as well mill the heads to up the compression . Don't know if going with bigger valves will be worth the trouble.

If you have a mechanical fuel pump, you also need a fuel pump push rod for a roller cam as well.

What size do you have in there now? If they're stock, and you're using a roller, then man, you'll gain a good deal by using bigger valves.

Hows the oil pressure ? has it dropped any ?
Does the engine smoke ? hows the compression?

If it were my call...before I pulled the engine, especially after a recent paint job I would take the intake off and have a look around.

I would then take the drain plug out and I`d flush it all out real good with a few gallons kerosene, pouring it all down the valley front to back.

I`d plug the bypass on the oil filter adapter while you`re at it.
Fill it back up and run it.

I pulled the intake and everything looks "normal" . No big chunks of material which I was kind of expecting to find. But one think(or rather thing:D ) I did find after removing the valve cover was little pieces(3) of what appear teeth. I'm worried it came from the oil pump . I am about to take everything out in about 30 mins. I just don't want to jump the gun if I don't have to. Regarding my oil pressure I've got 60 psi at cold start up and and 210 deg. the oil pressure stays at 20 psi. Compression is between 185-190 on all cylinders. And it doesn't smoke at all. I think I will try the flushing out deal before I tear into the engine. I just bought some 6 qts of mobil 1 synthetic oil for a total of $10 from a neighbor , that's about a $42 value :D . Don't know why he sold it so cheap but I am going to put it in after I flush the engine . This last oil change I did was the first time the oil filter adapter had the bypass plugged . So in reality this should be my second oil change and maybe I should still give it a chance (??).

I;m no expert, but I would think the gains would be real marginal.

Get out your gun barrel brushes, kerosense, and flush that bad boy out!

Worked on it a little this morning then stopped . I've got the intake and about 10
head bolts out. Those headers are making it real hard to get to the bolts . Wish me luck! :) Looks like the only change I'll make is get the heads milled to raise comp. ratio.

Good luck with it, I lost a cam in a fresh motor and had to pull it & replace all the bearings, so I know what you're going through.....

IMHO, it's better to pull it and be sure of what you have, rather then flush it and worry about it EVERY time you hammer on it.....

Thanks. I am going to work on it for the entire day if I have to . I was thinking of pulling the heads off first but I might just pull the engine out from the side with the hoist. Camaros are real nosey and if you use the hoist on the front it wil tear up the nose and paint. It's harder trying to pull the engine and not scratch your paint job than if the paint was faded and didn't care if you scratched it. I 've had a little bit of help from buddys but they worry me because they put all their weight on the fenders with nothing between them and the fenders. I keep telling them to be careful.
