bud,
A PerTronix conversion is an excellent way to go if you would like to retain your original, smaller point type dist. The unit is completely contained INSIDE the dist cap. They are sold by many aftermarket sources and I just saw an ad on one of the recent posts. The part number for a Chev dist is (was) 1181, but they have just released a new one which should be easier/faster to install, it is 1181LCS. With the PerTronix conversion, a higher voltage coil such as MSD Blaster 2 or PerTronix Flame Thrower and a good set of wires you can open your plug gap to .040-.045.
