I have a 67 SS. I have fully functioning guages, e.g., oil pressure, water, and tach.
However, I do not have ammeter or idiot light for charging system. In my former 67 Malibu, I had both the idiot lights working and guages also working. On my 67 SS, the idiot lights are not hooked up. The previous owner apparently installed the guages and the idiot lights on dash are not working nor is brake light.

Question: Should I just buy a separate ammeter (brand recommendations),and hook up and not worry about charging system idiot light, and:

Can you have idiot lights working simultaneously with guages. Or is this too much hassle. I like the guages and they work fine giving me good readings.

Any thoughts or comments are appreciated.

Thanks,

Do you have the factory gauge option or are they after market? If aftermarket I recommend you install a volt gauge rather than an amp gauge. What alternator are you using? You can have a gauge and a light but if you are using a one wire alt you won't be able to connect the light.

How many times have you heard "my car caught on fire because Amp gauge malfunctioned" listen to Elree on this one about using a volt meter instead.

I remember when the wires of my amp meter "touched", and set off a cloud of acrid smoke bellowing from under the dash. Had to have the car towed home, as it fried the powerlead wire from the battery, and others.

But.....I still like the amp gauge, and have isolated and insulated the wires. Five years now and doing well.

Thanks guys. First, the guages are aftermarket. Second, I replaced the original alternator (or older alternator) and put in 135 amp alternator since I am running an electric fan off of the radiator and thought it best to upgrade. The alternator is wired for the original wiring, re: 3 wire alternator. So, I guess as you stated I can have the idiot lights installed along with the voltmeter you suggested.

Thanks,
