Can anyone tell me how to distinguish between a '70-'72 tilt steering column w/ auto shifter, from one that is just out of some other car? A guy wants to sell me one that he claims is out of a '72 chevelle, but I am not so sure he is honest. I want to purchase it right of way, so I need fast help! Thanks!

Hugh,
It could be hard to say because there is a LOT of interchangeability within GM. we just put a tilt/cruise column in my son's 71 Chevelle which was out of a 79 Camaro PERFECT FIT. One thing in particular to look for, the junction near the firewall where the column is clamped to the steering shaft changed in 79. pre-78 has a splined joint and 79-up has 2 flats on the shaft. I can't say for sure if the rag joint at the gear box is different.

I am wondering more about matching numbers for the column. Thanks for the reply though! I just want to know what the part number is for a '70-'72 chevelle tilt column! I am looking for original parts. If anyone has a numbers manual, I need your help!

Hollander says 71-72 chevelle,70-72 monte carlo, 71-72 GMC sprint. For some reason it says 69-70 chevelle with T.H 400. It gives I.D. numbers of 7802923
7807900
7807903
7808148
7809319
7810024
7812207
I don't Know were the numbers would be on the column
