I’m looking for information on how to identify a L78 block. I know the front pad will have the suffix code EG stamped on it but I also know that you can have the pad decked and a new suffix code and vin stamped on the pad. Are there any other markings of stamps that will show that a block is verified a L78 motor block?

It have a solid lift cam in it ?
That would be an indication that it could be L78 . Doesnt really verify it 100 percent either way though . Could have had the cam changed .
What numbers have you found ?

4 bolt block is a very good indicator it's an L78...post some pic of the EG block stamp.

That stamp is good, and with that date the 961 4-bolt block is correct. It should also have the two larger holes for oil cooler lines above the oil filter area.

Can you post the VIN stamp? And the casting date? I will guess it is E196 or E206. I'd like to add this one to my database. I keep track of the numbers on every real 66-67 L78 car or engine that surfaces. Thanks!

I have data on several 0620 assembly date blocks that were all E196 or E206. Never mind on VIN, I already have that block in my database from the eBay listing.

hey Jeff, I have a 961 with 4-bolt main and missing VIN. Interested in helping me identify if this is an L78 or not?

Post pics of deck, the oil cooler holes, and the casting date, and we'll see what we can see!

if you build this engine be aware that there's a by-pass valve that goes one of those oil cooler holes. if it's left out there's no oil filter. IIRC. This is not the same as the filter bypass.

Jeff, the new poster, carlseibel, has his photos in another thread. Interesting service dated block.
