I'm looking to install an aftermarket sound system on my son's '72. It came factory with the front stereo speakers (only has an AM radio though). Has anyone found a decent sounding aftermarket speaker that can fit in those spots with or without the orig brackets? There's not alot of room up there (A/C car) and I don't really want to mess with door panels or kickpanels to install front speakers. On my '70 Elky, I had mounted some tweeters to the orig brackets. That was ok, but they didn't really have enough mid-range to sound right with the rear speakers.

I was going to convert to a stereo dachpad on my 70 and use these speakers and make custom brackets.

I didn't really get into the measurements because I decided to stay with the center speaker dash that I have (it's in perfect condition) and run two 4" speakers there.

I remember thinking that the light switch would be an issue if I went with too big of a speaker.

Any decent 4" speakers will do. You can make up a mount from plywood using your old speaker as a template. You will lose some separation but it's better tha cutting up your car. I made a bracket and installed a pair in my 68. You can buy a speaker like this:

but the mount is pretty is easy to make and there are better 4" speakers out there

I installed two 3 or 3.5" speakers in the stock location on my 69 using the bracket from the original speaker. I now have a 6" component set that I am going to try and use by making a custom bracket under the dash around the ash tray with the speakers facing down towards the floor. This will be hidden under the dash and you won't be ableto see speakers at all. I dont want to cut the new door panels or the kick panels to install these. If it works I will post some pics when I am done.
