I read about all the great cool stuff you guys' Chevelles have and think there's no way to keep up. BUT, I do think I may have something better than anyone else's: my lights :D

Up front, I have european Cibie E-code halogens, with H4 55/100 watts outside and H1 100 watts inside. I switch them with relay harnesses direct from an alternator distribution block for full voltage and current. In the back, I have Spaghetti Engineering LED circuit boards. And just for fun, a Hella LED board third eye stop light.

Tell me, how can you beat that? Not that anyone cares :boring:

Oh no :noway: They are high performance lights that come from Europe. They have regular halogen bulbs shining through lead crystal glass lenses. Their light pattern has a very well defined cut off so they are actually way less dazzling to oncoming drivers than even the stock lights. HOWEVER, when I hit my brights, watch out, as night turns to day with 400W burning, over half a horse power generating light.

I hate those aftermarket HIDs that just happen to fit the receptacles of regular light because their filament isn't in the same place as a halogen, so their pattern it totally messed up and they do dazzle and blind. Even worse, I hate those chinese bulbs with blue glass that try to imitate an HID with a projector lens. They just look cheesy. The Cibie's are very classy.

My car had one T3 left in the set, it's now sitting in a box. I understand that they are desirable?

In 1976, I learned about european headlights and bought a set of 7" round ones for my Duster. I was in high school at the time, and bought them just for safety. Weird, huh? I remember very well that they were $47 a pair, and my dad was pissed that I was wasting money. Then I took him for a ride to show him how good they were, and he had me order him a set. I was bummed when cars started having unique headlights, cuz I couldn't put Cibies in any more. But obviously, over the years, those unique headlights have improved and there's no longer a need. The HID bi-xenons's in our Volvo wagon and even the halogen projectors in our Subaru wagons are fantastic.

By the way, this is just a whimsical thread. I certainly don't think I am cool cuz I have a collection of Cibie lights I got off of eBay. I would trade them for a Wolfplace motor in a heartbeat :D

your right...no one cares
It should be "you're", which is a contraction of "you" and "are". As erroneously used in the quote, it would be a possessive second-person pronoun, which doesn't make sense. That is, unless you meant that it was my right (privilege), but no one cares.

BTDT

Well I have the competing brand instead: Hella.
And I run standard bulbs 55/60 and 55.

And I'll raise ya on the electrical cool factor because my relays and all are in a cool power distribution box :p

I agree that this kind of light setup is the cat's meow though. You don't just see trees on the side of the road, you see the COLOR of the trees on the side of the road.

Gib, we love you and your (did I get that right?) unique thinking process.

In these parts (Ontario, Canada) they banned aftermarket HID headlight kits for the reason you stated (improper filament placement that bedazzled oncoming drivers).

I pulled a complete, working set of T3s off my '67 and boxed them and just used garden variety halogens. They are a considerable improvement over stock but aren't the paint peelers that you have on your car

My 2010 Passat has a nice set of bi-xenon headlights that turn up to 15 degrees as you turn the steering wheel. The trouble is that the days of the cheap DIY headlight replacement are generally over. At least the tail lights are long life LED type.

Question? Are your new lights 48 state approved? Reason being, In 72-73 I had the lights in my El Camino with the silver bullet in the center, It was a heat sink.
You may want to check the candle power of the lights, Why? If they excede the mandated C.P. You may have a problem. Also my high powered lights needed air flow to function well. 40 years later I still have them, I believe they were Lucas.
Check your total Amp. draw on your relays. Some new style lights draw a TON of Amps. If you excede the rated Amp. draw, You may have a melt down.

I use a candle :D
I drive with a miners helmet / lamp on my head. If I get out into the country I duct tape two maglights to my core support.

If I get into some real bad weather and visual situations I put a radio headset on my wife and have her walk in front of the car giving verbal directions.

The latter is my "green solution".

gibbons, do you have any pictures? I want to upgrade my lights, but I want them to look somewhat "stock" when they're off.

I do a lot of night-driving, and deer are pretty bad around here...

Riding in a friends' Honda S2000 at night has convinced me that headlight upgrades are a worthwhile and necessary improvement for these old cars.

OK, Beaux, you can joke about headlights, but you are obviously up on the topic. In the products section of the Daniel Stern site, you will see what the head lights look like, the 5 3/4" units. You have to be reasonably astute to notice that they are different. They don't have shrouds and chrome domes in them, or anything like that.

I had two left over from a car years ago, and found two more on eBay. But you can buy a new set. They are incredibly better than the stockers.

The two left over were from a Honda Accord in the 80's. It actually had 4 headlight types. Two were the regular hi/lo and high like I have now, but I had 2 special black market units from Europe. One was a low beam only that fit in the hi/lo spot. It had a broad beam with perfect cut off, but no high. The other was a "pencil" high beam, the lens didn't have any fluting in it, like a spot light. That was the best headlight set ever!
