Spotted an ad recently while cruising the local FB and CList pages. The ad was for a core 454, I noticed the wide parting line on the disassembled engine's crank. Off to the races, turns out to be a 289 block (one of my fav street blocks) 2 bolt, good set of truck (thumb) rods, clean set of 781's, Steel 7416 crank and all of the tin. $300.00 bucks. Looks like I am going to do one more 496 since I have a stroker crank, H beams and SRP's in stock. Will probably clean up the OE crank and resale or use on a future project, 781's are getting harder to sell nowadays. I am set up now, partially retired and have test stand, always a joy to hear that first fire-up.

Might even put these 781's to use on the 496, mild street motor won't see past 6,000 rpm. What do you think?

Not to hijack but I recall you having a gulf green 72. Did you finish it? Curious what the color looks like fresh

781s on a 496!??? What the heck the heck you gonna do with 650 ft lbs!?!?! :D

I know pros prefer the larger as cast ex ports of the 049s for their 4,25" stroke builds but......... as I said, how much TQ you want?

BIG SCORE!
This is interesting Gene, I have several sets of 049's on hand, I didn't know this. Can you point me in the right direction here, would like to know more about this" Will do a thread search.

I know over the years I was told the 049's were crack prone over the 781's but I have yet to hear or see that on any of those oval port heads that cracked, except maybe for those trucks that were overheated with those heads in the past.

Nothing wrong with a little BBC but once you stroke it it's hard to stop, now look at me:
