Back in the 70's, my dad would let me stand in the front seat of his car while we were driving. The only reason he made me stop was because I got too tall and he was worried about the headliner!!!

Fast forward to 2008......... Now, I have 2 young children and a 71 Chevelle. Up until recently I was able to put my 8 year old daughter up front in a booster using the lap and shoulder belts and my son in the back in a car seat secured with the lap belt (the car seat has a built in harness). My son has now outgrown the "baby seat" and is in a regular booster seat.

Right there on the booster seats is says "NEVER USE WITH LAP BELT ONLY"

No problem in the daily drivers that have rear shoulder belts.

Where am I supposed to put two kids requiring shoulder belts in this car?

I love taking the kids to shows. We have 2 or 3 of them every week.

What do you guys do?

My dad let me sit on his lap and steer the car around town when I was 5. (1940-something Buick, in '64--'65.)

I was doing a poor 'n' frustrating job of learning to drive a 66 Biscayne Station Wagon with a 3-speed manual at 12. Learning to back that car with the boat trailer into the driveway at 13.

I couldn't "spot" a water skiier when I was younger than 12--state law. So we got an older kid to spot, I drove the boat instead.

**** carseats. **** most politicians. **** Safety Nazis.

What the heck was a car seat? Not only did I not sit in a car seat when I was little (were they even invented yet, early 70's), I never even wore a seat belt until the mid-90's.

There was a thread about this very subject a few days ago with some good info. My personal feeling is use what's available in the car. If it only has a lap belt, go with that.

In 1975 , I would standup in the front seat of my grandmothers 65 malibu. She would give me a half a stick of wrigleys chewing gum on the way to town.In 1976 I got to standup in the front seat of my Great Grandfathers 1965 Buick Electra with a 425 Wildcat motor. Also would lay up behind the back seat in the back glass and waive at everybody.

In 1978, I was eight years old and talked my grand paw into letting me drive him home in this Datson 210 automatic, convinced him he had way to much to drink.Boy did he catch it from my mother and grandmother.:noway:

No child car seats when I was a kid either. How did we ever survive without the government right there to take away our rights and do all our thinking for us? It must have been a miracle.

Remember how much fun you had taking a slow ride around the neighborhood in the bed of your grandpa's pickup truck? Don't try that stunt while the nanny patrol is watching either...

Rode standing up in the front seat of moms Vega all the time.
My sister and I used to ride in the back of dads truck every Sunday to grandpanents house 50 miles each way. Not sure how I survived.

Rear seat shoulder belts were optional back to at least 1969 I think. The holes are in the parcel shelf. Find a front seat set of shoulder belts. They will probably work in the rear. There is hope for the kids going with Dad yet. ;)
