Hello i have a big block 454 i pulled out of a GMC flatbed. Im deciding on whether or not to put it in my 71 chevelle so i want to figure out the horsepower and all the information i can. The engine casting number is 14015445. The number over the timing chain cover is 10602TRF. Any info you can give me is appreciated. Thanks.

Preston,

Welcome to Team Chevelle.
One trade-off for a big engine, a big powerful engine in modified form is rather poor MPG.
How poor depends on many factors, including the driver's right foot pressure on the gas pedal.
BBCs here get from 18 (or there about with OD transmissions) down to 8 (or less) MPG.
Stock 10-12 MPG is a fair guess.
The mid 70s 454s had low compression and very mild cams. Some more compression, decent cam, game on.
My lightly modified 454 now has 8.8:1 CR and may possibly run a 12.9 something/103 mph this coming FRIDAY.

As PDQ said, #206 heads (last three casting numbers on the head) have small chambers. That and a shim gasket really boost the low compression ratio...then add a moderate performance cam. Huge gain in power.
Other heads to look for are #702 and #390.
I have 063 heads....chambers are a bit biger so my CR with a regular gasket is 8.8:1.
