Todd pointed out these gears to me not too long after the auction started. I thought about putting a bid in on them, but decided against it. I can't believe a used gear set brought that kind of money. I paid $150 for the M22 gear set I bought. Sure they don't look as nice as those, but when you are shifting gears it feels as nice as a Muncie should. I can't believe those hit $500. I was thinking they might get up to $350 at most. They were at $280 this morning.

I mean ,hell, I paid $700 for the whole M22 I bought last year. The gears in that transmission were quite a bit nicer than those. So my question is, did I get a hell of a deal or are those gears a clear case of two guys having to out do one another?

I admit I am a little partial to OEM Rock Crusher gears, but at a point it just seems a little carried away.

Your perspective is skewed. The prices you have paid for parts are extremely low compared to most of the country, especially in major metropolitan areas.
Perhaps it is. There are still deals to be had if a person doesn't have the "I have to have this right here, right now" type of mentality. I'm a cheapskate. No matter how bad I may want something, I won't buy it unless the price is right.

The $150 gear set I bought I had no idea how well they would work. The engagement teeth on second gear ,and the input, were pretty beat up. It was a science experiment more than anything else. I got lucky and the transmission ended up working very well. The '72 M22 I guess I lucked into that. As far as I know the guy was going to ask $750 up at Pamona for it. He sold it to me for $700 since he didn't have to haul it.

OEM M22 gears command more money in an original GM M22 case. It will always be that way.
I don't mean to pry here, but if you were willing to pay $600 for them what do you think you could have gotten out of them? Or would you have built a transmission using an empty case you have?

You answered your own question. You are a cheapskate, so the prices seem high. There are always "deals" to be had, but the fact that they are "deals" means they sell for less than they are worth. Rebuilt M22s have been 1800 and up in the chicago area going on 10 years now.

I would have shelved them until I found an original M22 case to put them into.

Perhaps cheapskate was the wrong choice of word. I am not going to pay more than I feel something is worth. To me an OEM M22 gear set is not worth over $500 unless they are of the NOS variety. Then of course they would be worth more. The reason being is I don't know what kind of life those gears have led. They could be quite fatigued and ready to break as soon as they get leaned on. For not too much more money you could snag a brand new gear set that is of good quality. If it is an item that I really want I will pay up to what I feel it's fair worth is. But I have yet to come across the item that I am willing to get carried away because I absolutely have to have it.

I thought the price was way too high myself, but apparently the Chevelle community does not feel that way.

no way would I pay anywhere near that when you can get brand new gears for not much more. nobody sees them so....but if you did find an original case to poke em in it would be worth it I suppose just to sell.

This almost makes me think I could sell my FrankenMuncie for a good piece of change. Of course people will look at those gears, get all uppity and say, "Well, there is no way that transmission would work. Look how bad those engagement teeth are." That's ok I guess. I didn't build the transmission to sell. I built it because I wanted an M22 of my own. One of these days everything will get transferred to a real M22 case. Don't know when though.

Yeah, I saw it. I've been watching it. Much as I'd like to have it I can't afford it. I could afford it if I sold the M22 that's currently in my car, but I'd be in the same boat if I bought that one. I'd just have a transmission that's two years older.

I tell you what I really want would be a bare '70-'74 661 case with that miniscule "C" stamp on it. Then I could transfer all the guts of my 325 cased Muncie to that one. Everyone and their Grandmother tells me I should just buy a Super Case, but I don't want one for either of these transmissions.
