This is a photo of what it looks like that I borrowed from the internet. I have not yet taken an actual one of hers yet

The odometer only says 83,000 miles. I know that this cannot be true because the motor is super clean, runs very quiet and seems to be very strong.I havent checked the VIN numbers on the block yet, but I'm very sure that this is NOT the origional engine. The only thing I had to do to it was change out the left rear window motor, change the tires (which were completely bald), install a CD Player, and a viper alarm system for her (Circuit city installed the alarm themselves). The guy that traded it in to the dealer had a lot of stickers all over the windows with hispanic writings on it that was sort of hard to get off, but with the help of a razor we finally managed to do it. I can see that whoever it was the traded it in took very good care of it too. I've never owned an SUV before so I know very little about them, but if she doesn't wreck this thing, she should have it for a very long time. Now I don't have to chaufer her around town anymore. Believe it or not, the gas consumption doesn't seem to be as bad as I expected it to be either... for an SUV of course. Not bad for $1500 eh :)

Does look good. I have a '96, and I can tell you that it might actually be
the correct mileage. Mine has 101,000 and has a new engine that was
done at 93,000. It seems that some of the 4.0 V6 engines did not make
it to 100,000. On mine it was a cracked head, factory defect that took that long to show symptoms. When Ford did the new head it was defective and sucked a valve, so they had to pay for a new engine. Besides checking the numbers you might pay the $19 or so for a carfax report, to see if there's anything else you might want to know about. Still, for the price that looks like a great deal to me.

Let's see, you could have bought a new Explorer for about $30,000 and it might get 2 mpg more. Buying the $1500 one leaves you with $28,500 to pay for the difference in gas mileage. At $2.50/gal it would take.................................... an eternity to make up the difference........looks like a good deal to me.:D

Just remind her that 4WD does not help to stop and steer. It ONLY helps to make the vehicle go. Also, that it has a higher center of gravity than a car, and will handle differently. Lastly, teach her how to operate 4WD. It would be a shame to blow the transfer case because she was running it in 4WD on a hard surface.

Had a 92 that the trans went out on. They are also prone to worn out radius arm bushings. The trans is also subject to failure at high mileage, ask me how I know. My suggestion would be to add a trans cooler if it already doesn't have one and be careful of long hot drives at high speeds especially under a load. Those conditions have a way of destroying the explorers high mileage transnissions. Also check to make sure the radiator cooling fan is working properly and isn't cracking(another common problem). Of course I learned all this after the fact. Otherwise I believe these are solid vehicles. I enjoyed mine until..... Good luck Pete

I have done this repair for a friend.
The catalitic (funny that I can't spell that!) converter is right below the radiau arm bushing. As the converter gets clogged, it gets VERY VERY hot. This heat just cooks that radius bushing.

I think his got just over 120k miles before he sold it. No other major snafus. He never toed anything, and his was 2WD.

Happy trails.
