I have a block that had a piston melt in it and there is a spot of aluminum stuck to the side of the cylinder wall. Before I got to the machine shop, I would like to remove it and see what it looks like underneath if possible. Is there a way to do it without scratching the wall up?

Thanks for the reply. It seems to be really stuck on there good, I dont think the dingleberry hone would "knock" it off, I think something like heat or something would have to be used, but I dont know if that is a good idea or not.

Dry ice, and then gently try to break it loose. If the aluminum spot is small it will be difficult to remove.

Or just let the machine shop do it.

If it were me! I would take a flat file, and go to the bench grinder and grind the end in radius, and at about 45 degs (about!), so that the end is curve and at angle, then take, then hand stone it to clean it up, keeping the edge sharp. You should be able to shave it right off. I keep one in my work rollaway all the time for that reason.
Should not harm the block unless, you leave the edge to rough, and scratch it!

I melted one in a Pontiac years ago, get some Lye at the grocery store, mix with warm water and scrub the walls with a tooth brush. The lye will eat the aluminum off the walls and you can hone it. Takes a while, but you won't damage the walls this way.
