What do I need to pull the timing gear off the crank to replace the timing set with the new cam? A 3 jaw puller maybe?

Around 30000 miles on the chain and gears. I havent decided which set to go with yet, maybe a Cloyes Tru roller.

I have always used a sharp chisel and big hammer. Place the chisel directly over the keyway and hit it HARD one time. The gear will crack and slide off easily.

BRUTAL!!! Never heard of that one. It will definitely work though.

I should have been more specific. I never tried this on a roller chain gear, just the factory type gears used with link belt type chains. They break rather easily at that point.

I just pulled my gear drive gear off the crank with a 3/4" diameter brass punch and a heavy hammer, working it side to side. I used the same punch to put the new gear on.

Use the chisel method if it is a cast sprocket, not on a steel sprocket.

And be careful NOT to whack it too hard, OR you might just knock the snout off a cast crank!! Forged crank, whack away!!

I've junked many a "Y"-block Ford by just knocking the snout off the crank using a 10 pound Ford Tool!!
