If I painted my licence plate? I was going to run a PA D.A.R.E. plate because it was black in color, but they changed it to that stupid blue white yellow plate....

Think they'd get PO'd if I painted one black?? :p

I might try it with some sort of soluable paint (acrylic?) so that I get clean it up with laquer thinner if needed....

The car would look so cool with a black plate.... Why'd they F it up?

David

P.S. The regs only state that the plate has to be reflective, legible and list the state....

It's illegal in NY also, plus the fine is the same as having no license plates on the car. The car will be towed to the local car-pound, where you have to pay to get it back (usually around $100-$200 plus). I can state this for sure, as I was riding with a kid that had changed only the colors of the numbers on the plates. The cop was Officer Green and it was in Wayland, NY. Funny enough, the Judge was Judge Purple (who later got caught for DWI and wouldn't take the tests). Anyway, he payed a fine of $175, plus $100 to get his car back and that was back in 1978.

Well if they used to issue black plates just recently, and you're not trying to make a 2005 plate look like a 1971 plate then how would they know if you painted it. Just if they go to run your plates they might see, but if they just stopped the black ones I say go for it since those are pretty new also. I guess as long as the fonts and words are the same and the only diff is the color then it's ok. Not like CA where the word 'california' is different on all the different color plates so it would be totally obvious if you tried to paint a new style plate black.

I searched some, most say it it is not the original colors then they require you get a new plate.

I'd just email DMV and tell them you have a "personalized" plate with worn paint and you would like to know if you could paint it, ask if there is any specific colors. Make sure you tell them personalized plate , if not they'll probly tell you to get another generic issued.

Most likely they'll say no, even though your only going with black, they don't want people painting their tags some freaky unreadable colors.
