I am running a stock alternator and external regulator on my race car. It has elec. fan, water pump drive, fuel pump and an MSD box. I need to upgrade but I am not sure what I need. I know I need a regulator that will start charging sooner but I do not know wich one I need. Can anybody tell me what works for them?

Best thing I did was convert to a 1-wire 96amp alternator.
Easy to do.

Be careful if you choose a 1-wire alterator; some won't charge at all until you reach an "excite" threshold of 1000 RPM or higher. If you're looking to recharge while idling between rounds, a newer high-amp 2-wire internal regulator alternator will put out gobs of amperage at idle. Harness conversion kits are available from several aftermarket Chevelle suppliers.
