I think I would only rat on a friend if he killed somebody and told me about it. But other than that, I would just pretend I didn't know. If it's a serious sitution then explain the mess he has you in.

Friends help you move.

REAL friends help you move the body.

That said, I don't know nothin' but if the shoe was on the other foot, I'd be nervous at the defendants table. :D

As stated, a good friend wouldn't put you in that position. If you lie you'll probably find yourself out of a job and facing criminal charges. Sometimes doing the right thing can cost you plenty. Can you in good conscience be comfortable not telling the truth? Tuff call.

I was actually put in that position once and I hope it never happens again. It hurts too damn much! I could not do it. My up bringing was just too good I guess to allow me to lie for a good friend. He went away for a very long time leaving a wife and two kids without a husband and a dad. Wost was he had his wife come to me (with kids in tow) to ask me to say he was out on the road with me. I said no but he told his lawyer different and I was brought into court. I would NEVER ask or expect a friend or even a family member to lie on my behalf! It is just wrong and the most unfair thing a friend could do.

The most I/you/we can hope is that this person would plead ignorance while not pergering (ok, that's spelled way wrong) themselves. As a best friend or whatever, we can't ask someone else to sacrifice themselves for us.

It goes both ways. Once that sort of thing is asked, the asker is no longer a friend. I guess the logic is circular, but it seems right to me.

No, if it was something serious enough that they needed me to testify in court, I would not lie.

If it was to lie to a wife about a night out at a strip-club, sure... no problem. :) I might even make up a story without him asking me to. :D

My best friend and I would do darn near anything for each other. We have borrowed each other thousands at a time to pick up a car or whatever and never blinked an eye. I know things and have told "people" cover stories for him in his past, but if it were something serious in a court room, I don't know that I could cover him then. Honestly I don't suspect he would expect me too, and I certainly wouldn't expect him too either. If were talking about a traffic offense thats one thing, but once it gets into the upper felony range, keep me out of it.

So far, we've both been in front of the judge for the same offenses (or he's been in a different state), so I can't really say, but if it were serious enough, we know we would have to tell the truth.
