I know how advancing timing can help on the launch, but I just heard a comment that it can hurt at the top end of the 1/4 mile (mph). Is this true in gerneral? This person said that backing off on his total timing made the car perform better on the top end of the track with better mph. Didnt make sense to me.

Mike, I've heard that on our blown cars only, but as far as most N/A SBC's or BBC's I've seen only guys run 36-40 total and have the best power. This is just from experience from local car guys. Could be wrong in some motor combos....

If it were me I'd just swap springs in the dizzy to make total come to a hault sooner and have less advance all together. I'd keep my base timing for low-end but it would help reduce total timing and the possible harm of detonation. The last 1/8 mile is where im concerned since its WOT in 3rd gear for 5k rpms or higher finishing the 1/4. The first 2 gears I run through its only hitting 5500-5800rpms for a breef peroid but in 3rd gear it holds the RPMS longer which does concern me some.

The car has more load against the engine requiring slightly lees timing than in 1st gear. Usually afew deg. less timing in high gear will make for a little more trap speed. Ofcourse like everything else a little experimentation is required.
