Does anyone have any experiance running a crane 284 H (228 degrees at.050,.544 lift In+Ex) #103062 in a 454 with 781 heads ,I got 10 to 1's in it and dual plane intake and headers. I got a deal on this old stock and didn't realise at the time just how much cam these motors could take over the small block or other big blocks. Any help on this is appreciated.

this is an excellent cam. i have used it in several smog 454 over last 30 years. stock comp. 781 heads, headers, aluminum intake and small holley, 3.73 3200 convertor. went 12.70 in 70 nova. stock street car full weight. almost dead smooth idle. i would use it again.

Sounds very similar to the grind that Crane used to make for GMPP. I used that cam in a stock '70 LS5 454 and it ran great. I used a 2400 stall B&M torque converter and it was a nice combo with 3.31 rear gears.

Do you think a higher CR would effect the cams running characteristics powerwise very much or is this a cam designed for the lower compression versions of the 454. Do these engines need more duration with a Higher CR even if the rpm is kept under 5800. Does the longer duration help midrange power output as well (over 3500). Thanks for your thoughts so far,I know these are tough questions to ask but this experience is tough to find over here so I gotta at least ask.
