Take the nuts off, or caps.
If bolts slighty hit the bolt varying side until the cap un seats

If its caps, just back out the caps a little bit but make sure they are still somewhat threaded in. Then hit the caps gently until the rod cap detatches.

71,
ARP bolts are very tight. Take the nuts off, then put the rod in a vise with the piston up, only clamp the cap in the vise. If you have some smooth jaws its better, but if you are careful you can do it in any vise. Once you have the cap clamped in pretty good, pul up on the rod and wiggle it from front to back as it sits in the engine. It should work loose. DO NOT hit the bolts. If you can wait, I will bring my camera to the shop on Friday and post some pics of how I do it, along with an alternative method that does not use the vise, but ruins a screwdriver handle :) Again .... DO NOT HIT THE BOLTS !!! :( I will try to do it in the AM, but my internet at work is pretty dismal so I might not post the pics till the evening.

Or .... teke them to the shop and have them take them loose :) I always loosen them up after resizing the rods, just because I know what a pain it is to do and it only takes me a minute or two.

Oh alright I was thinking you had the shortblock assembled and were trying to get the cap off so you could take the piston/rod out of the motor.

BillK something wrong with hitting the bolt to unseat the rod cap when the shortblock is together? I was tought just to use a soft plastic mallet.

I agree if its not in the motor I would use the same method as Bill stated.

I agree with Bill you do not want to disturb the bolts as they are seated in the rod. If it is in the motor I usually will use a wooden dowel and hit the bottom of the piston to break the cap loose. Out of the motor a vise (preferably a non marking rod vise) is best to wiggle them apart.

Ok, here are two pics as promised. The first one shows the rod in the rod vise. I would be wiggling it up and down while pulling torards me in this picture.

The second pic shows the ruined Snap On screw driver handle. I couldnt hold the rod and screwdriver and take the pic but you get the idea.

Hitting the rod bolts can unseat them from the rod and affect the alignment when you pull them back tight again.

Jack,
I use the method that Ray uses, a long 3/4" wood dowel on the bottom of the pin bore on the piston.

As far as the cap removing fixtures ..... I bought the Eagle one and it was a waste of money, it does not worth a crap :(
