After I painted my car I noticed the metallic was uneven, this is a bc/cc, i've read on different threads about dusting the last coat were the metallics would lay down even.

My question is when you dust the paint on do you hold the gun further away from the car? do you keep the are pressure the same?

Can someone define dusting for me? how toos?

If you want the metallic to flow out evenly, on the last coat, make passes on a 45 degree angle relative to the previous pass. Do a search for Basics of Basics. Brian Martin did a very nice write up on this topic.

What brand line are you using?
There are things or products that will help the metallics...Eric

Eric, I'm spraying omni paint. The mix is 1:1 its a candy apple red like you see on the dodge pickups. When I say candy apple its just a single stage base, there is no gold or silver under it but it is bc/cc, I dont want to confuse you when I say candy apple.

I really dont under the concept of dusting. so a dusting 101 class would be helpful. Thanks

I just painted that car last night. It is only the second car I've ever painted and I was using a very high metallic silver, and it came out perfect, no blotches, tiger stripes or shadows.

And here is how I did it:

I bought an Iwata HPV-400 spray gun (I swear I think a monkey could get great results with that gun) and used PPGs Deltron base coat which is one of their higher end paints. It was not cheap, but I got a paint job that would have cost me 8k - 12k if I paid a shop to do it. Plus, I can say I did it myself, and am very proud of the results.

Oh yeah, I also spent countless hours on this site reading everything I could www.autobody101.com/forums/ :)

Don't be afraid to spend the extra money. The results will be well worth it.

Am very famliar with that color. I dont know if they offer such things in the OMNI line like they do with the regular PPG stuff, but adding hardner to the basecoat will help control the metallics.
Dont add hardner to whole batch just add it to what you mix up to spray.
Another thing you can get is clear basecoat, the DBC part number is DBC500, once again I dont remember if its offered in the OMNI line.

You spray your basecoat getting coverage first. Then on the last coat or two I mixed in that DBC500 at a 50% ratio. What that does is kinda thin it down but not really, helps control the metallics.

But those two things are NOT cure all's if you have poor gun setup and spray technique. Those are biggest effects on metallic control.
Also the proper reducer plays a HUGE factor in metallic layout. Make sure you have the right reducer for the temps.

Make sure your gun is setup right and pratice getting 50% overlap, you can use straight lacquer thinner for this. Spray on some cardboard and watch your spray pattern and overlap.

IMO, dusting a color should be a last resort, not a cover for poor setup and technique. Eventho dusting on some colors is 100% needed its not the cure all.
Brian's got a good write up on "dusting" color...Eric
