Am wondering what it takes to get HVAC certified. I recently quit my bodyshop career so I can get back into the electrical field.
Can you get HVAC certified by taking some sort of online classes or classes at a local college? Or is it more involved that one would need to go back to school and get a degree?
Ive got my foot throu the door on a government position and if I had that HVAC cert it would seal the deal.
Thanks for any input...Eric

Theres stuff like this - http://www.gatlineducation.com/hvaccertification.html

other online courses and ground / campus courses as well.

I dont believe you would need to go back to get another degree or anything since its "certification" and that word (being in the computer world) to me means you train, you test, you pass = certified

If you go to google and type in HVAC certification you will get a TON of info. I was bored, did it for you but too damn lazy to post every link listed. The one above was at the top of the list. :D

When I got my certification I had to take a class and pass the tests for type l, type ll & type lll but I think all you have to do now is pay 20 bucks and do it online.

if you have electrical background you should do OK because about 80% of airconditioning/refrigeration problems are electrical related.

Whaaattt??

Is this health related, or just burnt on the bodyman trade??

(You're too good a "metal-man" to leave..)
My health did play into effect, I need to start thinking future wise. Tired of the endless BS and seeing people with no knowledge decide how much my paycheck is:mad:

Plus its about time to put that electrical degree too good use

I think the question you maybe asking is "How do I get my Journeyman's HVAC License"
You will have to check with your local area. Usually it is a test you take at city hall for licensing. Just taking a certification course will help you pass your Journeyman's test, not give you license. Type I, II, III & Universal is what kind of systems you are allowed to work on. I have found in my job searching that many of this companies around here do not have "licensed" workers. Usually the business owner has his Master's HVAC and the work is done under his license.

That's how it is here also JR.
Well, that is except for Kansas City Kansas where all of our guys must have a card but that's only so the city can collect more money, no qualifying involved.

JR,
No doubt that jounreyman license would be top notch and a great addition to the resume. But most places Ive talked too and even this gov job, just want the cert. The government job contracts most of the work out, but yet they would want me to be HVAC certified.
Later down the road, that license would be great, but right now just the cert will work, hopefully.
My background is electrical, PLCs, VFDs etc, I know enough about HVAC to get me in trouble:)

Just got my Universal certification in October. A few of us guys got together and had the vocational AC instuctor at the prison give us the test. I'm not sure if you could do it online. The teach kept mentioning a Proctor had to administer the test. Nugent Associates, (1-718-745-1642) was who certified the test after we took it. The teacher sent the test to Nugent. I spoke to this Nugent guy on the phone and he is really hard to understand. If you need specifics, I can ask the teacher at the Prison how it all works or I could get you his number. david

Here are 2 organizations the Air Force used for Cert's as Universal, but I'm sure there are places in your area that can issue you the test. Try Overland Park's Community College web site. Or look up your local city gov site.
